Home by Halftime — A Homecoming Song for the One Who Left, Timed to the Halftime Stand

Tomorrow's Friday the eleventh of September — twenty-five years on — and all over small-town America the season opens with hats off at halftime. That's the clock this song runs on.

Home by Halftime is for the one who left. Twelve years gone, chasing city light past Memphis, telling himself he'd make it big and never once saying when. Then Mama calls on Sunday: the bleachers got a fresh coat of paint, the band's been practicing the salute, and Friday night the whole town stands at halftime for the ones who never came home. Well. A man can time his return by worse clocks.

The turn, if you ask me, is the truest thing in it: he didn't come back to watch a football game. He came to be seen coming home. There's a difference between a town you visit and a town that never let you finish leaving — and every porch light out there knows which kind you're driving toward.

Acoustic guitar, fiddle, mandolin, and a fiddle break long enough to let the Friday lights do some talking. Turn it up, roll the window down, and point it toward home.

Lyrics

[Verse 1]

Twelve years since I rolled out with a duffel and a grin,

Chased them city lights past Memphis, swore I'd make it, didn't say when.

Mama called on Sunday, said the bleachers got a coat of paint,

And Friday night they're standing at halftime for the ones we lost —

Son, don't be late.

[Chorus]

I'm comin' home by halftime, when the whole town stands as one,

Under them Friday lights that never let us go.

You can chase a hundred horizons, wear a hundred different names,

But the porch light burns the same — come on home.

[Verse 2]

Ellen's boy wears number nine now, wears it loose and wearing proud,

Coach Mac still tips his ball cap when he spots me in the crowd.

They strung flags along the fence line, first responders at the gate,

And the band sounds soft and steady like a heartbeat for the brave.

[Chorus]

I'm comin' home by halftime, when the whole town stands as one,

Under them Friday lights that never let us go.

You can chase a hundred horizons, wear a hundred different names,

But the porch light burns the same — come on home.

[Fiddle Break]

[Bridge]

I thought I came to watch a game — some boys I've never met,

Chasin' down a Friday like the ones I can't forget.

Then them lights kicked on at seven, and I finally understood:

I didn't come to see the field — I came to be seen comin' home for good.

[Verse 3]

Halftime whistle, hats come off, hands go over every heart,

Twenty-five Septembers on, and this town still says their names.

Mama squeezes my elbow, says, "Boy, you always did run late."

I say, "No ma'am, I timed it right — I made it home by halftime."

[Spoken Outro]

Rolled in at the two-minute warning, dust still on the glass,

mama's casserole riding shotgun.

Some towns you leave.

This one... never let me finish leavin'.
