The Wednesday night drop, now with picture. "Understudy" went up at noon — the mirror-bulbs, the label note, the flannel-and-fences girl the city keeps auditioning — and tonight it gets its official lyric video, timed line-by-line to the track.

This one is the Synth-Pop Metropolis era doing what it does best: glossy 1989 chrome and neon on the outside, a diary entry underneath. The video opens on the dressing room at half past midnight — half the face still stage-bright, half already wiped clean — and walks the whole night: the corridor, the chorus under falling glitter, the car with the headlines glowing through the window, the lobby small-talk, and the folding chair that started everything. The bridge twists where the song twists: the glitter was never the disguise.

Fun secret for the day-one crowd: the bow at the end is the same spotlight that's been following this channel since Paper Crown's porch light — it just finally learned choreography. And yes, "my first crowd was a folding chair — he clapped off the beat, and stayed" is exactly the easter egg you think it is. (Front Row, 9/13 — he's still in the seventh row.)

New here? Every weekday, one original song in a rotating seven-era cycle — Monday country-bright through Sunday ballad. Understudy is song twenty of the songbook and tonight's video is the twelfth lyric film. Full lyric sheet and the song's own post live here.

Tap play, sing the chorus like you mean it, and stay for the last line — the one about being the show.
