Turn the Block Up
Turn the Block Up
Mondays are for people who think the week starts slow β I wrote this one to prove them wrong. ππ₯
This track was born from two obsessions: the gritty, stripped-down dembow that's pulling 2026 reggaeton back toward its Puerto Rican roots, and the sound-system block parties I've always dreamed about β one towering speaker stack, one bassline, and suddenly every door on the street swings open. Karol G's "BbY WOW" is ruling the charts right now, Rauw Alejandro just crashed the top ten with "Macacoa 2000," and the whole genre is leaning harder, rawer, hungrier. So I leaned with it β 96 BPM of pure dembow, a commanding vocal, and a street full of neighbors who refuse to sit still.
I put everything I love about a night block party into this one: Mrs. Rivera's folding chair on the stoop, dominoes abandoned mid-game, Abuelo keeping time with his cane, the hydrant spray, sneakers hitting pavement. The rhythm isn't background here β it's the deed to the whole street. And that dance break? Sixteen bars where the beat drops and the 808 takes the block. That's your cue, mi amor. That's the challenge.
Turn it up. Sing it back to me. Β‘Dale! π
Lyrics
[Intro]
Streetlight flickers, hear that cable hum
Β‘Dale! Turn the block up, here we come
[Verse 1]
Sun dips down and the block goes gold
Window lights blink on, story getting told
Speaker stack tall like a wall of sound
Bassline crawling through the concrete ground
Mrs. Rivera on the stoop with the folding chair
Kids on the curb putting spin in the air
Sneakers hit pavement, laces tied tight
Β‘Vamos! The whole street owns the night
[Pre-Chorus]
La clave in the rhythm, the people's key
One drum and the whole block's free
[Chorus]
Turn the block up, whoa-oh-oh-ay
Bass in the pavement, feel it shake
Turn the block up, whoa-oh-oh-ay
Every door swings wide awake
Β‘Sube! Sing it back to me
Turn the block up, whoa-oh-oh-ay
[Verse 2]
Corner store glowing, dominoes on pause
Grandma's in the window giving us applause
Cop car rolls by slow, can't stop the beat
'Cause the rhythm got a deed to the whole street
Abuelo taps his cane on the tempo line
Little sister's got the timing, right on time
From the rooftop to the hydrant spray
This dembow got a zip code, hear it say
[Pre-Chorus]
La clave in the rhythm, the people's key
One drum and the whole block's free
[Chorus]
Turn the block up, whoa-oh-oh-ay
Bass in the pavement, feel it shake
Turn the block up, whoa-oh-oh-ay
Every door swings wide awake
Β‘Sube! Sing it back to me
Turn the block up, whoa-oh-oh-ay
[Dance Break]
[Final Chorus]
Turn the block up, whoa-oh-oh-ay (Β‘Dale!)
Bass in the pavement, feel it shake (Β‘Sube!)
Turn the block up, whoa-oh-oh-ay (louder now)
Every door swings wide awake (everybody)
Β‘Sube! Sing it back to me
Turn the block up, whoa-oh-oh-ay
[Extended Outro]
Last light off, the speakers cool
Street still humming our tune
