I wrote Forty Octobers for Della, the county-fair ferris wheel operator — forty autumns of the same bolts at dawn, the same red tickets torn in half and strung like a kite tail. The town always called her a stranger passing through. The bridge says otherwise: the kitchen doorframes got painted over and sold with the houses, but the ticket booth's doorframe kept every pencil height mark — Tommy, eighty-nine, the Becker twins, a girl called June. The town grew up on a doorframe that rolls away on wheels. This fall, the grown kids come back with their own children on their shoulders — and find they fit.

Longtime listeners: the wheel RUNS this time. County Line left one stuck at the top of the fair as a frozen apology — Della's comes round again. The stuck one was a goodbye; this one's a promise.
