Tiffany — FIRE DRILL — Pop Rock Heartbreak Ballad | Emotional Heart-Touching Country Music

A pop-rock heartbreak ballad about pulling alarms just to watch him come running — original music 2026.

"Every time he saves me, there's a little less of him there."

This one is the hardest song I've ever written, because the villain is me. She calls him at midnight from the shoulder of Route 9 — hazards on, engine fine — and times him on her phone like she's grading a fire crew. Every drill is a test she already knows the answer to, until the night she pulls one and he finally walks. The bridge is where she stops lying to herself: it was never about whether he'd stay. Every drill was a rehearsal for the day he'd go.

Written from the shoulder of a county road that keeps showing up in my songs — same Route 9 as Short Way Home, different fire.

Full lyrics below. 💛

I call him at midnight from the shoulder of Route 9 Hazards on in heartland dark, the engine purring fine He comes in one shoe with his work shirt inside out And I time him on my phone like I'm grading a fire crew I start a war about the dishes just to watch him stay Then he sleeps on the couch and makes my coffee anyway

Every time he passes, I write it in the margin A gold star in pencil, so I can erase it The hall detector chirps for a battery I won't buy I'd rather keep the warning than learn to sleep without it

So I pull the fire drill, pull it one more time Set the kettle screaming just to watch him come inside Every bell's a question I'm too scared to say out loud Do you love me, do you love me, will you come back now And he does, Lord, he does, with the engine still running Every time he saves me, I just set another one

The drills come twice a week now, then they come every night A stranger on the porch, a pain beneath my ribs I burn his letters in the yard barrel with the leaves I call it autumn when he smells it on my sleeves He sleeps in his boots now, his keys beside the bed He says, "I'm here, I'm here," like a prayer worn thin as thread

Every time he passes, the margin's getting fuller And I keep the pencil sharp so I can still erase it The hall detector's chirping like it's counting down for me He looks at me like a man who's memorizing exits

So I pull the fire drill, pull it one more time Set the kettle screaming just to watch him come inside Every bell's a question I'm too scared to say out loud Do you love me, do you love me, will you come back now And he does, he still does, but he's slower on the stairs Every time he saves me, there's a little less of him there

The night he needs me, I pull one more, and he just walks And here's the thing I never wrote in pencil or in pen It was never about whether he would stay Every drill was a rehearsal for the day he'd go

So I pull the fire drill, pull it one last time But it's October, and the kettle doesn't scream I buy the battery, and the hallway stops its song Every bell I don't ring is the answer that I feared And I hear it now, I hear it, the silence that I chose Turns out you can't run a drill for a door that's really closed I'm still timing on my phone, but nobody's coming home
