The Wrong Place: A GPU Got 19Β°C Cooler Being Mounted Incorrectly (NX Tech Tips #25)

A modder stood his graphics card up in the wrong spot and it ran nineteen degrees cooler. Also: Japan declared a national emergency over hackers (the casualty list includes barbecue), a nuclear startup sued the investors who believed in it first, Samsung's newest tablet is thinner than my patience and $100 more expensive, and DDR4 just got called back to the majors because DDR5 priced itself like concert tickets.

1. The "wrong place" is 19Β°C cooler

Thirty years of PC-building convention says the graphics card lies flat. Modder TrashBench stood his GPU vertically, directly against the side intake fans β€” hotspot dropped by up to 19Β°C. The catch: his CPU ran hotter. It's fixing back pain by sleeping vertically. Except this time it worked. β†’ Per Tom's Hardware (Oct 11): https://www.tomshardware.com/pc-components/gpus/modder-discovers-that-putting-a-gpu-in-the-wrong-place-can-deliver-a-19-degree-cooler-hotspot-breaking-convention-can-produce-great-results-despite-decades-of-pc-diy-evolution

2. Japan declared a state of emergency in cyberspace

After 20+ major Japanese companies disclosed cyberattacks β€” including rail giant JR East and a barbecue chain that lost nearly 11 million accounts β€” Japan's cybersecurity chief declared the country in "a state of emergency" in cyberspace. The hackers came for the brisket. β†’ Per the FT (Oct 9), covered by Gizmodo: https://gizmodo.com/we-have-entered-a-cybersecurity-hellscape-japan-warns-2000824268 and The Economist (Oct 8): https://www.economist.com/asia/2026/10/08/japan-reckons-with-a-spate-of-cyber-attacks

3. A nuclear startup sued its own early investor

Valar Atomics raised a $1B Series B led by Sequoia. Day One Ventures β€” the fund that wrote early checks when it was two guys and a PowerPoint β€” got shut out of the round. Valar's response: sue them, in Delaware. It's winning the lottery and having your cousin arrested for watching. β†’ Per The Information (Oct 9): https://www.theinformation.com/briefings/valar-atomics-sues-investor-day-one-funding-round-allocation (terms via ValueAdd VC: https://valueaddvc.com/pulse/valar-atomics-sues-day-one-series-b-2026)

4. The thinnest Galaxy Tab ever is $100 thicker in price

Samsung's Galaxy Tab S12 Ultra: 5.1mm thin, 14.6 inches, from $1,399 β€” a $100 bump over last year β€” and the first Android tablet ever with Photoshop pre-installed. The price is the only thing that got thicker. β†’ Per 9to5Google: https://9to5google.com/2026/09/30/samsung-galaxy-tab-s12-official/ and PhoneArena: https://www.phonearena.com/galaxy-tab-s12-release-date-price-features-news

5. DDR4 rises from the dead

DDR5 got so expensive that Intel and AMD are reportedly building brand-new CPUs that support decade-old DDR4 β€” new chips for old sockets, so builders can dodge the AI-fueled memory price spike. Nostalgia is officially a spec sheet. DDR4 is the cockroach of PC building: it survives every apocalypse, including the one AI caused. β†’ Per The Verge (Oct 9): https://www.theverge.com/games/1009140/ram-shortage-intel-amd-ddr4-comeback and The FPS Review: https://www.thefpsreview.com/2026/10/09/ddr4-refuses-to-die-as-new-processors-from-intel-supporting-the-older-memory-are-expected-to-launch-soon/
