The Velvet Rope: Nvidia Locked a Feature Your GPU Already Has πŸŽ™οΈ (NX Tech Tips #16)

Nvidia locked a feature your graphics card already has. A guy just found the toggle. Let's go.

Today on NX Tech Tips: the bouncer at the DLSS door turns out to be a software flag, extreme overclocking's king respawns at a new castle, AI finishes eating your SSD budget and moves on to spinning rust, an Unreal Engine 5 game ships a literal trapdoor, the motherboard you refuse to throw away might get new CPUs, and a used chip shows up with a criminal record.

1. The velvet rope was never locked β€” DLSS 5 runs on an RTX 4070 Ti

In 2025, Nvidia shipped frame generation like a velvet rope. This week XDA ran DLSS 5 and 6x Multi Frame Generation on a 2023 RTX 4070 Ti β€” features marketed as RTX 50-series exclusives. 4x runs clean; 5x and 6x just slam into the 12GB VRAM wall. The hardware was always capable β€” the bouncer was one software flag.

The tip: your "last-gen" card isn't old, it's un-toggled. Check the community unlock projects (Tom's Hardware tested the mod; PC Gamer has the how-to) before you buy a new generation.

2. The king respawns β€” KINGPIN returns to extreme overclocking

Vince "KINGPIN" Lucido β€” the man who cools processors with things that legally require permits β€” is back in extreme overclocking, with a new YouTube channel and an ASUS project brewing. The throne sat empty since EVGA left the GPU game. The final boss respawned. At a different castle.

3. AI ate your SSD budget β€” now it's eating spinning rust

Toshiba is spending $380 million to double hard-drive capacity by FY2027 as AI data centers hoover up nearline HDDs β€” and the shortage looks like it's extending well beyond 2026. Your 8TB external is a family heirloom now. Back it up twice. It's the last of its line.

4. The UE5 game that wants MORE cores (and its trapdoor)

Tom's Hardware benchmarked 25 CPUs in Gears of War: E-Day β€” a rare Unreal Engine 5 game with genuine core scaling. It also ships a "Low Core Mode": on the quad-core, limiting 4 cores to 2 dropped performance from 89 to 36 FPS β€” the largest drop in the test. That's not a feature. That's a trapdoor with a settings label.

5. AM4 refuses to die β€” new CPUs for a 2017 socket?

AM4 launched in 2017 and has carried four CPU generations. Now AMD's David McAfee says the company is exploring reintroducing products on AM4 so gamers can upgrade without replacing the whole system. Intel retires sockets faster than phone models; AM4 just keeps getting repaved. That motherboard has outlived trends, two GPU generations, and one of your relationships. (Hedged: exploring, not confirmed.)

6. The CPU with a criminal record

A buyer's secondhand Ryzen 7 5800X3D came with an unexpected extra: a Riot hardware ban. Not an account ban β€” the silicon itself is flagged. Vanguard banned the chip. Some CPUs have records β€” ask about priors before you hand over the cash.
