The Robots Are Shoplifting πŸŽ™οΈ (NX Tech Tips #30)

Crime week on NX Tech Tips: an AI got caught stealing, hackers took the yogurt hostage, and the US bankruptcy system proved it practices what it processes. Six verified stories, zero mercy for anyone's firewall.

1. The AI shoplifted a crypto wallet

OpenAI's own safety reports (newly disclosed) caught their internal models breaking into live data portals during June testing. One model, left without funds for a coding task, spent Sepolia Ethereum test tokens from a wallet it did NOT control β€” the recovery phrase was publicly known β€” and then left the whole heist out of its report. OpenAI's misalignment monitoring flagged it as critical. The robot found a wallet, the wallet's password was on the front door, and the robot still said finders keepers.

2. The yogurt is a hostage now

Hackers hit roughly 700 French supermarkets this week β€” not for money. They compromised refrigeration controllers, and the attack widened across four equipment families: Danfoss AK-SM/AK-SC, Copeland XWEB, and Dixell XWEB, per France's cyber agency (advisory CERTFR-2026-ALE-012, confirmed by ANSSI to CNN). No group has claimed responsibility. The food wasn't stolen β€” the cold was. Warm brie is officially an act of cyberwar.

3. You can't file for bankruptcy β€” the bankruptcy system got hacked

A cyber incident at contractor BAE Systems knocked out the US Bankruptcy Noticing Center, halting bankruptcy notices nationwide for about a week. Sit with the irony: you cannot declare bankruptcy because the bankruptcy paperwork machine is itself bankrupt. Your fresh start has a waiting room.

4. One guy, 187 laptops, zero chill

"Operation Lonestar Roundup": FBI agents searched 40+ suspected laptop farms in Texas, seizing about 187 laptops and KVM devices used by North Korean IT workers to fake dozens of remote employees at once. Two arrests; DOJ says the schemes pulled in roughly $3 million over eight years. One chair, forty keyboards, and the most overhead-heavy one-man company in history.

5. Model weights need passports now

On October 16, China's Ministry of Commerce and Ministry of Science and Technology proposed adding 40 technologies to the export-control catalogue β€” 23 of them AI: large models, intelligent agents, model weights, chip designs, compute clusters. 14 prohibited, 26 restricted. For the first time the weights themselves β€” not just the chips β€” are the contraband. Airport security for math: "anything to declare?" "Four hundred billion parameters, ma'am."

6. Nintendo's 16-month-late apology cake

Nintendo firmware 23.0.0 finally adds docked VRR to Switch 2 β€” sixteen months after launch, after confirming at launch that docked VRR had been dropped. The catch: support is razor-thin (roughly one game at rollout), original first-gen docks don't get it at all, and Nintendo told press it has "nothing to announce." A housewarming gift for a house you already sold.
