The Priced-Out Episode: PC Sales Crashed 20% β€” The Shortage Solved Itself πŸŽ™οΈ (NX Tech Tips #23)

PC Sales Just Crashed 20% β€” the Shortage Solved Itself

(NX Tech Tips #23 β€” The Priced-Out Episode. Watch the video above; here are the receipts.)

The week of October 9, 2026, tech didn't run out of products. It ran out of customers willing to pay for them. Let's go.

1. PC shipments fell 20.1% β€” the shortage fixed itself

IDC's preliminary numbers: worldwide PC shipments dropped 20.1% year over year in Q3 2026 to 62.7 million units (down from 78.5 million), the sharpest decline since Q1 2023, and 9.1% below Q2. HP lost 30.9% of its volume; Dell fell 25%. The post-tariff stockpiling wave unwound, prices stayed high β€” and demand just left. Economics, but with a Delete key. (IDC via TechPowerUp, Ars Technica, Wccftech, hwbusters.)

The tip: the "shortage" was never solved by supply β€” it was solved by sticker shock. If you're waiting for prices to "normalize," so is everyone; that's why the shelves finally look stocked.

2. OpenAI's revenue is ~$20 billion short of what investors were told

OpenAI's annualized revenue now reads about $50 billion β€” roughly $20 billion less than previously indicated to investors (~$70B had been reported). The FT broke it; the Guardian, TechCrunch and Axios followed, with Axios noting the gap partly reflects how different AI companies account for sales. Still: the company selling the future flunked its own math homework. Even the oracle Googles itself.

The tip: when a vendor's growth story drives the roadmap of everything you buy (RAM, GPUs, rent), the revenue line IS hardware news.

3. Samsung raised Galaxy prices overnight

Since October 1, every Galaxy S26 variant costs $100 more β€” the base 256GB model now starts at $999.99, the 512GB went $1,099.99 β†’ $1,199.99, and the 1TB S26 Ultra jumped $200 to $2,000. At least seven devices, including four Galaxy A models, got the same treatment (PhoneArena via BGR; Engadget; Gizmodo). No new phone. No event. The patch notes raised the price.

The tip: same phone, same Tuesday, new math β€” memory costs get passed through as silent price hikes, not launch events.

4. AMD hiked Radeon prices in China β€” your increase is the wide release

Reported Chinese price increases since the start of October: the RX 9070 rose Β₯700 to Β₯6,299 (~$939, about +$104) β€” the steepest hike β€” while the RX 9060 XT 16GB went up Β₯600 and its 8GB brother Β₯300. The RX 9070 XT stayed put; now only Β₯700 separates the two cards. TechPowerUp says international increases are expected to follow (VideoCardz, TechPowerUp, PC Guide, eTeknix).

The tip: China's price sheet is the trailer; Western markets get the premiere. If history rhymes, budget for your region's version of +$104 before year-end.

5. Apple's "Welcome Home" event is October 13 β€” the HomePad era begins

Apple confirmed a "Welcome Home" event for Tuesday, October 13 (Greg Joswiak: "Welcome home. October 13."). Expected headliner: the long-rumored HomePad smart display β€” a ~7-inch hub running a new homeOS, powered by Siri AI/Apple Intelligence with a StandBy-style dashboard β€” reportedly delayed until Siri was actually ready. Refreshed Apple TV and HomePod mini are expected alongside (9to5Mac, Engadget, TechBriefly).

The tip: even the house has loading screens now. If your smart home is a pile of incompatible apps, this is the first credible "one hub" candidate β€” watch the Siri demos, not the slide deck.

6. The real tip: unpatched Windows PCs stop getting updates in 2027

Microsoft's certificate housekeeping: devices must be on a supported Windows version with current patches before Windows Update certificates expire on May 17 and June 19, 2027 (depending on version). Supported Windows 10 builds need the July 2026 security update or newer installed before June 19, 2027; Windows Server 2016's extended support ends January 2027 β€” before the first deadline. Windows 11 25H2 and newer need no action (BleepingComputer, WindowsForum, Betanews, MakeUseOf, ITdaily).

The tip: it's a passport check that runs silently until the airport. Patch tonight β€” in 2027 your PC's ID comes up "not valid for travel," and there's no customer-service desk.
