The Panic Button: Valve's Steam Machine Screams at 75ยฐ, Earbuds That Won't Commit & Free PS Plus Games ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ

NX Tech Tips #42 โ€” the weekly deep-dive. Four stories, every fact on screen with its source, every joke load-bearing. New episodes Thursdays.

1. The Steam Machine Panic Button (Fix It Already) ๐Ÿ”ด

Valve shipped its thousand-dollar gaming cube this month and the internet immediately renamed it a haunted house โ€” red panic lights, screaming, mid-game. The most dramatic one: an owner's machine threw the full red light bar while the GPU was running just 75 degrees. A GPU at 75ยฐ is barely warm. That's "wouldn't melt butter" territory.

Here's what's actually going on: the warning light was set to fire at 95ยฐC on the CPU and 90ยฐC on the GPU. But these custom AMD chips cruise at 95 degrees all day โ€” that's the normal operating neighborhood. Real performance throttling doesn't even start until 100ยฐC, and the protective shutdown sits at 105ยฐC. So the alarm was ringing while the house was fine.

Steam Support confirmed it plainly: "a known issue with the current BIOS that results in the red LED lights displaying much earlier than they should." The fix is already in development โ€” a BIOS update that raises the warning to a uniform 100ยฐC for both the CPU and GPU, exactly where the real limit lives. And Valve's guidance until it lands: the hardware is within normal operating temperature โ€” the alert can be safely ignored. Don't RMA your cube because of a light. Patch when the update shows up, and let the thermals do the talking.

That's the entire bug: a fire alarm that goes off when you cook dinner.

2. Earbuds That Don't Commit ๐ŸŽง

Samsung just launched the Galaxy Buds On โ€” its first clip-on, open-ear wireless earbuds. They're C-shaped hooks that sit outside your ear canal. No seal, no isolation, nothing pushed into your head โ€” you hear your music and the barista calling your name. Up to 9.5 hours per charge, and they're $229 in the US from early November (Korea got them first on October 27).

They hover near your ear and keep their options open. It's the Bluetooth headset of 2006 โ€” but fashion.

3. Samsung Is Losing Money to Itself ๐Ÿ“‰

The twist behind story two: Samsung's phone division just posted its second consecutive quarterly operating loss. On the earnings call, the company said rising component costs โ€” memory included โ€” mean it expects to ship fewer phones in 2027, with the entry-level and mid-range lines hit hardest.

The comedy here is structural: Samsung makes the memory and Samsung makes the phones. One hand of the company is winning the AI memory lottery; the other hand is buying the tickets. The AI boom ate the memory supply, memory contract prices spiked, and cheap phones can't absorb the bill. Self-inflicted, corporate edition.

4. The Gift: Free PS Plus Games ๐ŸŽฎ

The most useful story of the day costs nothing. PlayStation Plus November stacks three games, all claimable starting November 3:

  • Dead Island 2 (PS5/PS4) โ€” zombie-slaying melee through a sun-soaked HELL-A, three-player co-op.
  • Tomb Raider IVโ€“VI Remastered โ€” the Darkness Trilogy (The Last Revelation, Chronicles, The Angel of Darkness), with a one-button time machine that swaps between the original polygons and the remaster anytime.
  • Monster Train 2 (PS5) โ€” deckbuilding roguelite with angels and demons riding a train through Hell.

Three Tomb Raiders from when Lara was made of triangles. Claim them โ€” they stay in your library.
