1. Backglow: the glowing logo is an app now
The glowing Apple logo β dead since ~2015, resurrected on the new 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros with PROLED XDR displays β is back. And designer Juan Buis immediately gave it an app: Backglow. The free version adjusts the logo's brightness independently of the display. Full control adds the important stuff: make it breathe, move it to music, or have it blink when Claude needs you. Your laptop finally has a mood ring.

2. Nothing ships a gadget with no screen
Nothing CEO Carl Pei says the company's first "AI-native product" ships in December β and it adds no new screen. His three public details: no display, it couldn't have been built as an app, and it's "a tool, but one built with the personality and care" of a Nothing product. How does it ignore you without a screen? Silence. Premium ghosting.

3. NYT Cooking's AI: saved the chicken, nearly ruined the cake
NYT Cooking shipped an AI assistant that adapts recipes β ingredient swaps (no cilantro, wrong chicken cut), unit conversions, serving scaling, even turning a Bundt cake into muffins. The Verge's reviewer found it genuinely helpful β it saved a trip to the store β but it almost ruined her cake. The secret ingredient: it was trained in part on user comments. Aunt Linda taught this AI everything. Knowingly.
