| Dow | 53,277.01 | +0.98% |
| VIX | 15.13 | ๐ด Chill |
Markets ended the week on a surprisingly chill note despite the US-Canada trade talks imploding in spectacular fashion. The VIX is snoozing, gold is mooning, and Nvidia has everyone on edge ahead of earnings. Classic August vibes.
Trade negotiations between the US and Canada collapsed late Friday, and now 50% tariffs are live on roughly $20 billion of Canadian goods โ wine, hockey sticks, cement, paper, even textiles. Canada's PM Mark Carney called Trump's last-minute demands a "power play" and announced dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs starting in September. Trump fired back on Truth Social, accusing Canada of wanting "the benefits of statehood." Actual quote. The TSX actually rose 0.7% anyway โ Canada is not impressed.

Gold posted its third straight weekly gain, smashing through $4,600/oz after Treasury Secretary Bessent announced expanded long-dated bond buybacks. The dollar weakened, gold and Bitcoin both surged, and analysts are now eyeing a path to $4,891. Wall Street's weekly gold survey had exactly zero bears. Zero! Even the skeptics threw in the towel.

Nvidia warned its largest customers that prices on servers containing its AI chips will rise by more than 15%, with memory chip costs soaring as the driving factor. This comes just days before Nvidia's earnings report โ where the entire market will be holding its breath. Bernstein analyst Stacy Rasgon says "numbers should be good" but everyone wants commentary on the Rubin ramp. Oh, and Nvidia also partnered with Cloverleaf Infrastructure to keep building data centers. They're not slowing down โ they're billing more.

Anthropic could raise $100 billion in what would be the biggest tech IPO ever, valuing the five-year-old AI startup at $2 trillion โ yes, more than SpaceX. But here's the twist: sources say the IPO prospectus will list "AI backlash" as a material risk factor. Negative public sentiment toward AI and data centers is now officially something investors have to price in. Claude Opus 5 may be the #1 model on the planet right now, but Wall Street wants to know if the world still likes AI.

Nvidia is spending $6 billion on a sweeping partnership with startup Poolside to build an open AI ecosystem in the US โ a direct shot at both Chinese AI heavyweights and American competitors like OpenAI and Anthropic. This is Nvidia playing geopolitics with its checkbook: if the US government won't let Chinese companies buy Nvidia's best chips, Nvidia will build a US-based AI stack that doesn't need them.

In what has to be the most terrifying recall description of the year: nearly 3 million Teslas in China are being recalled because door handles may fail after severe collisions if the low-voltage system dies. Model 3, Y, S, and X โ all affected. The fix is an over-the-air software update, but there's something darkly poetic about a door handle that becomes a cage.

After a test flight and an ocean tow, SpaceX's Starship has landed on a remote island โ and the locals have embraced it with rumors, sightseeing tours, and a signature cocktail named after the spacecraft. This is space exploration meets Margaritaville, and honestly, we're here for it.

California's AG and 11 other states sued to block the Paramount-Warner Bros Discovery mega-merger. Now settlement talks begin Monday. Meanwhile, actor Mark Ruffalo went on an "unhinged antisemitic rant" against the deal (Paramount's words, not ours), and the studio fired back hard. Hollywood drama meets antitrust law โ grab the popcorn.

Italian energy giant Eni announced it aims to bring a commercial fusion power plant to Europe by the early 2040s โ calling fusion its "next refinery." This is way more ambitious than the "fusion is always 30 years away" joke. If they pull it off, we're looking at unlimited clean energy within two decades.
