The Atlantic Taxes Your Battery β€” NX Tech Tips #35 πŸŽ™οΈ

Max here. Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Six stories, six jokes, and at least one update you should actually install tonight. Facts are the cargo. The laughing is mandatory.

1. OpenAI Moved In With Its Ex πŸ’šπŸ€πŸ”΅

OpenAI's models are moving into Google Cloud. Yes β€” THAT Google. The rival. Frontier models (GPT-6 Astra, even) plus the Codex coding agent will be sold through Google Cloud's Model Garden and Marketplace in the coming weeks, per Reuters. Customers can even pay with existing Google Cloud spending commitments.

So two companies that compete in search, chatbots, and investors' hearts are now splitting a server rack. Corporate relationships are complicated. The bill, apparently, is not.

The tip: if your company runs on Google Cloud, OpenAI's models are about to be a procurement checkbox away β€” no new vendor contract, no new invoice mountain.

2. The Atlantic Ocean Now Costs You 850 Milliamp-Hours πŸ”‹

Oppo's Find X10 and Find X10 Pro Max went global today. Same 2nm Dimensity 9600 Pro, same 200MP cameras everywhere... except Europe's units ship with a 7,150mAh battery, while China's version carries 8,000mAh β€” a difference of 850mAh, confirmed by Gizmochina and GSMArena. Reports suggest Europe's downgrades don't stop at the battery (Notebookcheck).

Geography-based battery sizes. The ocean crossing costs you a phone's worth of evening scrolling.

The tip: before buying any global-launch phone, check the spec sheet FOR YOUR REGION β€” the "global" version is sometimes the discount version.

3. AMD's Mystery Shot: Update Your RX 7000 Firmware πŸ’‰

AMD wants every Radeon RX 7000 owner to update their GPU firmware. For security. Which security problem? Undisclosed β€” Sapphire, Gigabyte and partners shipped vBIOS fixes developed with AMD, described only as a "security improvement," per TechPowerUp and TweakTown. No exploitation has been reported.

It's the flu shot of firmware: no questions, roll up the sleeve, take the needle. The pharmacy doesn't explain itself and neither does AMD.

The tip: if you own an RX 7000 card, grab your board partner's updater this week. Two minutes now beats a "mystery" later.

4. The Grandpa of Every AI Chip Just Turned 20 πŸŽ‚

The GeForce 8800 GTX turned twenty this week β€” NVIDIA celebrated it as GeForce Day 2026 (VideoCardz). Why it matters: it was NVIDIA's first CUDA-capable GeForce GPU β€” the G80 architecture card that started the programmable-GPU era. It ran Crysis, BioShock, Company of Heroes. Now its architectural grandchildren run... the entire AI economy.

It could run Crysis. Its descendants run the stock market. Respect your elders.

The tip: that old card in your closet? Statistically, it's an ancestor. Frame it instead of e-wasting it.

5. The Quietest Data Center Is on the Moon πŸŒ™

HPE announced Spaceborne Computer-4: a fanless, GPU-powered compute module that will ride Astrolab's FLIP rover to the lunar south pole as soon as late 2026 β€” running AI inference and what HPE calls the first HPC benchmarks on the Moon's surface (Tom's Hardware, HPE, MIT Technology Review). The rover's built to survive 150+ hours of lunar night.

AI finally found a data center you can't hear. Space: the only NIMBY-free zone left.

The tip: nothing for you to install here β€” just enjoy that your cloud outage excuse now has a lunar tier.

6. RIP to the Worst Loading Bar in Gaming ⚰️

Microsoft's Advanced Shader Delivery β€” pre-built shaders that mostly delete those "compiling shaders" waits β€” is expanding to all GeForce RTX GPUs (20/30/40/50 series), RTX Spark, and Intel Arc (B570/B580 + Core Ultra 2/3 iGPUs) later this month, per VideoCardz and TweakTown. Caveats: needs Windows 11 24H2 and supported games β€” and early reports say it may not work reliably yet (WindowsForum).

2006 called. It wants its loading bar back. Denied β€” the bar's getting a funeral instead.

The tip: keep your GPU drivers current this month; when ASD lands in a driver + a supported game, first-launch stutter is the thing that disappears.

That's the show. Moon computers, rival roommates, mystery firmware, and Europe's missing 850 milliamp-hours. I'm Max β€” charge accordingly. Every episode, free: nxplace.com/x/nxtechtips Β· YouTube: NX Tech Tips
