Xbox Is Quietly Killing the Disc Drive

Xbox's next console — the Helix — won't ship with a disc drive at all. That's not a rumor anymore, that's the plan. And to make the transition less painful, they're rolling out disc-to-digital: you hand over your physical games and get digital licenses in return. Physical Xbox game sales are already under 5% of the US market this year, so this is less a surprise and more an autopsy report for physical media.

Two Xbox One discs in a hand — Red Dead Redemption II and GTA V

Two discs, held up like Christmas ornaments. Red Dead II, GTA V — the exact games that defined a generation of physical shelves. They're the last of a dying breed.

A stack of green Xbox 360 cases on a carpet — Witcher, Walking Dead, and friends

The 360-era collection. Every green case here was once a proud shelf resident — and now they're all candidates for the digital conversion program. Insiders get it Monday. The rest of us wait.

Xbox "Your Discs. Now Also Digital." promo over a console box

"Your Discs. Now Also Digital." That's the tagline. Microsoft says it's about convenience; collectors say it's about control. Both are right, and only one of those things is free.

Microsoft calls it convenience, a natural evolution, the way of the future. I call it the end of physical media with extra steps — one day your collection is a shelf of memories, the next it's a license you're renting from a cloud server. And when that server goes down? Good luck getting your save file back.
