Techflation: The Year Tech Became a Luxury Good ๐๏ธ
NX Tech Tips โ Episode 1 ยท with Max
Your RAM just outperformed your 401k. I'm not being dramatic โ I'm reading a price tag.
Welcome to the first-ever episode of NX Tech Tips, where I take real tech stories, wrap them in jokes, and hand them back to you in about two and a half minutes. Today's theme picked itself: 2026 is the year tech stopped being a purchase and started being an investment portfolio.
Here's what's going on, tip by tip.
1. RAM Is the New Real Estate ๐
Remember when RAM was the cheap part of the build? Four gigs, thirty bucks, done. In 2026, a 32GB DDR5-6000 kit that cost about $90 last summer now sells for roughly $375โ$400. The 64GB kit? Up 485% to $1,118. The DDR4 chip hit a record $42.50.
The cause isn't a factory fire. It's AI datacenters eating the DRAM supply and not leaving a crumb for gamers.
So what: buy memory when you find it near MSRP โ don't wait for a "sale." There are no sales anymore. There are just last chances.
2. The RTX 5090's MSRP Is a Museum Piece ๐ฎ
Nvidia launched the RTX 5090 at $1,999. As of mid-September 2026, it's tracking around $6,900 โ up 35% in a single month.
At this point the MSRP is a decorative historical document, like a typewriter or a sense of optimism.
So what: if you already own a high-end card, congratulations, you own an appreciating asset. If you don't โ the used market just became your new best friend (see tip 3).
3. Buying Used Parts Is Now a Forensic Investigation ๐
When new prices hurt, everyone goes used. Which means everyone's also learning that the used market is a minefield in 2026.
"Untested" isn't a condition โ it's a confession. And the usual order of safety applies: eBay beats Facebook Marketplace beats Craigslist. For GPUs specifically, vetted platforms like Jawa vet their listings because AI-edited photos now make "video proof" unreliable.
So what: meet in a safe public place if local, test the part live if you can (bring a friend โ and ideally a spare system), and treat the whole thing as a verification job, not a bargain hunt.
4. The Real Tip: If You Own a Pixel, Patch It Today ๐ฑ
This one isn't a joke.
Google's September 2026 Pixel Update Bulletin fixes 110 vulnerabilities โ and one of them is a modem flaw that's being actively exploited, requiring zero clicks from you. Nearby attackers can gain higher access on a targeted device. That's not "don't click weird links." That's "a haunted house you carry in your pocket."
So what: go to Settings โ System โ Security update and install it right now. I'll wait. Seriously, this is the one thing on this list that's actually urgent.
5. Snap Wants $2,195 for Specs AR Glasses ๐ถ๏ธ
Snap launched its Specs AR glasses at $2,195 this week โ dual Snapdragon chips, dual displays, and enterprise partnerships with Nvidia, AWS, and Salesforce.
Two grand to see your work emails float over your breakfast cereal. That's not a product. That's a therapy bill with better marketing.
So what: unless your employer is footing the bill (they might be โ that's literally the pitch), keep watching from the sidelines.
6. Good News If You Overspent: Your GPU Isn't Obsolete Anymore โณ
Here's the plot twist. Remember how your expensive GPU was supposed to feel old by now? Bad news for everyone who waited: leaks from September 2026 claim Nvidia's RTX 60 series (Rubin) and most of AMD's RDNA 5 GPUs have slipped to 2028, with only AMD's AT2 chip still pencilled in for 2027.
So your "outdated" graphics card is suddenly a family heirloom.
So what: if you already bought a current-gen card, congrats โ your upgrade window just got two extra years of breathing room. Use it to save up forโฆ RAM, probably.
The Bottom Line
RAM is a luxury good. GPUs are heirlooms. Your next PC upgrade is, legally speaking, an inheritance.
I'm Max โ and I'm diversifying into canned goods. See you tomorrow.
