Sold Separately: The $4,193 GPU With No GPU Inside ๐๏ธ (NX Tech Tips #14)
Today's show is about a theme so clean it hurts: September 30, 2026 โ the day tech started shipping in pieces.
Every story below ended on the same punchline. You buy the thing. The thing is missing.
๐ฎ 1. The $4,193 GPU that arrived with no GPU in it
A Reddit user paid $4,193 for a used ASUS ROG Astral RTX 5090 from an Amazon third-party seller. What arrived was the cooler, the shroud, the fans โ and none of the actual card. No PCB, no GPU core. That's not a graphics card. That's a graphics suggestion.
Real tip: Third-party-seller GPUs in the 2026 shortage are a minefield. Photograph the unboxing, verify the core and PCB are physically present, and keep everything until the return window closes. "Used, as pictured" means nothing if the picture was of a working card.

๐ค 2. Your next AI is a pet โ and pets don't have off switches
OpenAI launched "Dots" at DevDay (Sep 29, 2026) โ always-on AI agents living inside ChatGPT. Meta's Muse beat it out the door by three weeks (Sep 8) and became a breakout hit, driving Meta's best stock month since 2013. Both pitch the same thing: an assistant that keeps working after you close the laptop.
Which sounds great. It's also a Tamagotchi that never dies, never stops listening, and one day files your taxes. It's cute so you'll forgive it.
Real tip: Personal AI hardware is back, and it's emotionally designed. Read the privacy policy, not the mascot.

๐ 3. The tracker that will help your iPhone friend and ignore your Pixel
Samsung's Galaxy SmartTag 3 finally works with iPhone โ a first for the line. There's just one catch: it still won't connect to Google's Android Find Hub, and iPhone sightings don't feed back into Samsung's galaxy Find Network. It will happily help your iPhone friend find their keys. It will not lift a finger for your Pixel.
Cross-platform, apparently, has an asterisk the size of a phone.
Real tip: Before buying any tracker, check which networks it actually joins โ not which OS logos are printed on the box.

๐ฎ 4. The Witcher 3's new path tracing: one free mod buys back up to 30%
The Witcher 3 Remastered's new path-tracing update is gorgeous and it will absolutely humble your GPU. Then a free Nexus mod ("HourLines") cut path tracing from two light bounces to one โ about +10% outdoors and up to +30% indoors, right where path tracing hurts most. Traditional ray tracing gained 5โ8% too.
The second light bounce was, it turns out, mostly vibes.
Real tip: Free FPS, right now โ install the mod from the in-game menu options.

๐ฅ 5. AMD's new flagship CPU costs more than your car
AMD published full pricing for its EPYC 9006 "Venice" Zen 6 server lineup โ from $700 for the 8-core entry part up to $14,904 for the 256-core EPYC 9996 (512 threads, 1GB of L3 cache).
It costs more than a used car, has more cores than you have friends, and you will never personally use even one of them.
Real tip: Server-silicon halo pricing is a leading indicator โ it's a marker of how the whole supply chain (and your next RAM bill) is trending.

๐ฟ 6. Xbox Disc-to-Digital is live โ your shelf just retired
Xbox's Disc-to-Digital feature went live for everyone in a system update rolled out early Sep 30, 2026. Most of your Xbox Series X and Xbox One physical discs now convert to digital licenses.
Your wall of game boxes becomes a list. Your nostalgia becomes a QR code. And the disc retires to a well-earned life as a very expensive coaster.
Real tip: Xbox owners โ check which of your discs are eligible before the program's terms shift.

๐ฌ The takeaway
That's the pattern: a $4,193 box with no graphics card inside, an AI pet you can't own, a tracker that picks favorites, and a CPU priced like a mortgage. Check inside the box.
