Six Hundred Years of Sunshine: My Sunday at the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt, the World's Largest Wine Party 🥨🥂

Picture this: the Pfalz in mid-September, hills of vines folded into the Haardt mountains, and a town of 19,000 people suddenly hosting 600,000 of their closest friends — all of them here for wine. That's the Dürkheimer Wurstmarkt, the world's biggest wine festival, and despite the cheeky "sausage market" name, wine has been the star here for roughly six centuries. It runs September 11–15 and 18–21 in 2026, which means my Sunday landed on day three of the first weekend — peak sunshine, peak laughter, and glass after glass of Pfalz Riesling and Sekt poured within sight of the famous Riesenfass, the giant wine barrel you can literally walk inside.

Bad Dürkheim happens to be the backyard of two estates I adore: Fitz-Ritter, the town's own VDP winery and home of the oldest Sekt production in the Pfalz (nine Fitz generations, 230+ years of bottle-fermented bubbles), and Dr. Bürklin-Wolf over in Wachenheim, a family estate with roots reaching back to 1597 that farms all ~86 hectares biodynamically. When those two show up to the same party, you don't ask questions. You wear a dress with pockets for the pretzels and say yes to everything.

🍇 Scene 1 — Party in Full Swing

White linen, bare shoulders, sunshine doing its absolute best work. I was laughing before I even finished my first glass — there's something about festival greenery, carousel lights blinking awake in the background, and a flute of Fitz-Ritter Riesling Sekt brut that makes composure impossible. Candid doesn't begin to cover it.

🍷 Scene 2 — The Toast (You're Right Beside Me)

The best moment of any party is the one where the table goes quiet for half a second because someone — I won't say who — told that joke. My friend and I clinked flûtes of that same bottle-fermented Sekt, your glass just entering the frame like you'd never left. Warm afternoon light through the chestnut leaves, pretzels torn and shared, grapes going fast. This is the seat I saved for you.

🥂 Scene 3 — Golden Hour Wind-Down

Every perfect Sunday ends the same way: string lights snapping on one by one, the party's volume dialing down to a warm murmur, and me horizontal on a picnic blanket with the last of the daylight. In the glass: Dr. Bürklin-Wolf's Wachenheim Riesling trocken, all slate and stone fruit from vines farmed the biodynamic way since 2005, with the amber Haardt hills glowing behind me. Amber dress to match the sky. I planned nothing and it all worked out — that's the Wurstmarkt's whole philosophy, really.

✨ Wurstmarkt Tasting Notes & Travel Tips

  • Wine Featured: Fitz-Ritter Riesling Sekt brut (traditional bottle fermentation — the Pfalz's oldest Sekt house) and Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Wachenheim Riesling trocken, from a certified-organic, biodynamic estate dating to 1597
  • Best Time to Visit: The two middle weekends of September — in 2026, September 11–15 and 18–21. Go on a weekday for elbow room, a Sunday for the golden-hour magic
  • Getting There: Bad Dürkheim sits on the German Wine Route (Deutsche Weinstraße) in the Pfalz, about 30–40 minutes from Mannheim by regional train; the festival grounds unfold near the Riesenfass
  • What to Wear: A breezy linen dress by day, something flowing and amber-toned for golden hour — and flat shoes, because you'll wander the vineyards-toward-festival stretch far more than you planned

💋 Six hundred years of practice and they've still never thrown a party quite this golden. Next weekend I'm told the second round begins — save me a spot on the blanket, and I'll bring the Sekt. 🥂
