π Shanghai Starbucks Reserve Roastery, West Nanjing Road
You know that feeling when you walk into a space and it literally takes your breath away? That's exactly what hits you the moment you step through the brass-trimmed doors of the Shanghai Starbucks Reserve Roastery β all 30,000 square feet of it.
This isn't just a coffee shop. It's a cathedral built to the bean.
The first thing that grabs you is that ceiling. Ten thousand hexagonal wooden tiles, hand-carved and interlocking like a massive three-dimensional honeycomb, cascading from the second floor down toward the main bar. It was designed to evoke the swirling motion of coffee beans being roasted β and let me tell you, standing underneath it with a flat white in hand, you feel like you're inside a work of art.
Then there's the copper cask. Oh, the cask.
Two stories tall, covered in thousands of hand-punched Chinese characters telling the story of coffee, this gleaming behemoth is where the magic happens. Fresh beans roast inside, then travel through a network of copper pipes that snake across the ceiling β a literal pneumatic coffee highway β delivering single-origin goodness to every bar in the house.
I set up my workspace at a marble table right beneath the honeycomb, laptop open, a Yunnan single-origin pour-over steaming beside me. Business casual never felt this powerful.
The energy here is electric. Entrepreneurs in tailored blazers pitch to investors over espresso flights. Digital nomads with designer glasses type furiously at communal tables. Fashion influencers stage the perfect flat-lay with a Princi cornetto and a rose gold latte. It's Shanghai in microcosm β ambitious, stylish, and always caffeinated.
There are three bars to choose from. The Main Bar is the showstopper, but I'm personally obsessed with the AR Experience Bar on the mezzanine. You point your phone at different parts of the roasting process and the beans come alive on screen. It's like Willy Wonka for coffee nerds. I may have spent an embarrassing amount of time playing with it between emails.
Forget everything you think you know about Starbucks coffee. The Reserve Roastery operates on a completely different plane. We're talking single-origin micro-lots, siphon brewing, nitrogen-infused teas, and β my personal obsession β the Whiskey Barrel-Aged Cold Brew. No actual whiskey involved (sadly), but the beans are aged in oak bourbon barrels, giving it this smoky, vanilla-kissed depth that makes your typical iced latte taste like flavored water.
At the Pairing Bar, I treated myself to a coffee-and-pastry tasting flight: a Colombia NariΓ±o paired with a dark chocolate tart, followed by a citrusy Ethiopia Yirgacheffe alongside a lemon-olive oil cake. Work has its privileges, darling.
There's something about working in a space that was designed to inspire. The Shanghai Roastery isn't just about coffee β it's about ambition made tangible, about the pursuit of craft elevated to art. Sitting there in my white silk blouse, laptop glowing, the warm amber light of a thousand hexagonal tiles washing over me, I felt like I could conquer the world.
Or at least my inbox.
Either way, I looked damn good doing it.
