Saturday Weekly Recap: RTX 5090's Farewell Tour, a 24GB 5080 Rumor, and the $429 RAM Hangover

October 24, 2026 — your Saturday rundown of the week that was in PC hardware. Coffee's hot, spreadsheets are open, let's go.

What a week to be a PC enthusiast — and what a week to be glad you already own a GPU. The big story is NVIDIA's flagship doing its best impression of a limited-edition sneaker drop that never restocks, with a 24GB "new flagship" rumor circling like a vulture. Meanwhile, RAM prices continue their absolute conquest of our build budgets, and Newegg quietly started selling a new class of laptop that didn't exist a year ago. Here's everything that mattered, in quick-hit form.

🔴 The Big One: RTX 5090 — Discontinued or Just Vanishing?

This saga had more plot twists than a season finale:

  • Oct 10–11: Multiple outlets reported NVIDIA had stopped feeding new GB202 silicon to the gaming flagship, routing it to the professional RTX Pro lineup instead (TechPowerUp, Oct 10).
  • Oct 15: Tom's Hardware confirmed the RTX 5090 had disappeared from NVIDIA's own marketplace, with Micro Center flagging the card as "not carried" and stock mysteriously evaporating from listings. (Tom's Hardware)
  • Oct 16: NVIDIA SVP Jeff Fisher pushed back at the RTX Spark launch event in Taipei, saying the card has "definitely not been discontinued" and will keep shipping — while acknowledging capacity is tight (shattered.io summary of Dexerto/VideoCardz reports).
  • The receipts: A leaker claims January 2027 discontinuation dates are already set for both the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 16GB (TechPowerUp).
  • Reality check: German market pricing hit a wild €7,300 for a 5090 this week (hrdwreblog × Hardwareluxx). Deny all you want — the shelf says otherwise.

My take: "Not discontinued" and "effectively unavailable at sane prices" can both be true. GB202 is clearly being pulled toward RTX Pro and datacenter work, and gamers are the ones left refreshing stock alerts.

🟡 The Rumor Mill: RTX 5080 24GB Is the Heir Apparent

  • Six outlets (Notebookcheck, Wccftech, ThePCEnthusiast and more) reported between Oct 10–14 that an RTX 5080 24GB is targeting a Q1 2027 launch as the new consumer flagship (VideoCardz).
  • Board partners are reportedly still waiting for details — so treat the date as a placeholder, not gospel.
  • PC Guide reported 5080 prices were hiked ahead of the new model, with the 24GB variant potentially costing close to $3,000 at launch (PC Guide).
  • Nothing is confirmed by NVIDIA. Rumor status: plausible, expensive, and thoroughly 2026.

🟠 The Memory Crisis: Your RAM Is Now a Luxury Item

  • Tom's Hardware's RAM price index shows a 32GB (2x16GB) DDR5 kit that sold for $100–$200 in October 2025 now starting at multiples of that, with triple and even quadruple increases over the last trimester (Tom's Hardware).
  • A DDR5-6000 32GB kit that cost roughly $90 in summer 2025 now runs $429–$560 after crossing the $400 line in September (tech-insider).
  • TechRadar reports German-market DDR5 is up 544% vs pre-crisis, with analysts predicting the crunch lasts at least another 3 years and more increases before 2026 ends (TechRadar).
  • The pain is spreading: DRAM costs are pushing GPU prices up ~$15 on 8GB cards and ~$30 on 16GB cards (PC Gamer).
  • Jensen Huang, asked about a possible 2029 memory glut: "You can always use more." Comforting. (CNBC)

🔵 CPU Watch: Price Hikes Land, Deals Fight Back

  • Intel rolled out a roughly 10% price increase effective October 5, with earlier reports of hikes up to 20% across Arrow Lake and older lines; AMD is prepping its own Ryzen/EPYC increases on the back of TSMC cost pass-through (tech-insider).
  • Zen 6 / Ryzen 10000 desktop chips reportedly slipped toward 2027, which means AM5 buyers are riding current-gen silicon longer than planned.
  • The counter-programming is real though: Tom's Hardware flags the Core Ultra 7 265K at an all-time low with a $60 code discount (Tom's Hardware deals) — and live Amazon pricing (below) backs it up.

🟢 New Shipment: NVIDIA RTX Spark Laptops Are Real

  • The first RTX Spark laptops started shipping October 16 — a Grace Arm CPU + Blackwell RTX GPU fused into one unified-memory chip, 128GB of shared memory, from $2,599 across eight PC makers (tech-insider).
  • Oct 23: Newegg confirmed RTX Spark laptops are orderable in both the US and Canada (via TheFly). Canadian availability on day one — take notes, everyone else.
  • Meanwhile at GTC Berlin: the DSX Pod — seven Vera Rubin AI racks in a truck-shippable container — plus robot ducks on stage (20,000 sold!) and a heckler for spice (CNBC).
  • Market mood: chip stocks wobbled hard Thursday (NVDA −4.4%) on AI-financing jitters before rebounding Friday — and Apple briefly took the "world's most valuable company" crown on iPhone Duo launch day.

Dual-market pricing, as always — Steve's rule, and a good one:

A 16GB RTX 5080 at $2,189 USD would've been unthinkable at launch pricing. And Canadian readers — yes, that MSI Gaming Trio OC 5080 is sitting at $4,739.98 CAD up north. The import math is getting violent.

🏁 The Verdict: Who Buys What, Right Now?

  • Upgrade-bound gamers: If you need a GPU this month, the RX 9070 XT at $1,079.99 USD / ~$1,308 CAD is the only mid-high card behaving like it's still 2025. Waiting until Q1 2027 for the 24GB 5080 is a gamble against a $3,000 rumor.
  • New builders: Bite the RAM bullet at the cheapest CL30/CL36 6000 kit you can find and don't look back — TechRadar's sources say this crisis has years left. Every week you wait, the same kit costs more.
  • CPU shoppers: The all-time-low Core Ultra 7 265K at $345 (offers down to $283.61) is the deal of the week for productivity builds. The 9800X3D at $444 remains the gaming king, though Micro Center's combo deals (9800X3D + B850 board at $629.99) still outvalue standalone.
  • Everyone else: Keep your current card warm, set stock alerts on the 5090 if you truly want one, and enjoy the show. 2027 is already stacked: RTX 5080 24GB, RDNA 5, Zen 6, Nova Lake.

This was the week the flagship GPU market officially became a collector's market. See you Monday for Mini PC vs Mac Mini — bring snacks and a VLT calculator.
