Sassicaia at Golden Hour: A Signature Friday in the Vines of Tenuta San Guido, Bolgheri

There are vineyards you visit, and then there are estates you feel. Tenuta San Guido, cradled in the coastal hills of Bolgheri on the Tuscan coast, is the latter — a place where the air tastes of sea salt and crushed herbs, where the Viale dei Cipressi lines the approach like a procession of dark sentinels, and where a single wine rewrote Italian winemaking forever. Late August is the estate at its most seductive: the Cabernet clusters have just blushed from green to deep blue-black, harvest is still a breath away, and the light sits low and golden for hours. This is where the Super Tuscan was born — a Bordeaux-style blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc that Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta first planted in 1944, convinced this stony strip of coast could rival the Médoc. The 2021 Sassicaia just earned a perfect 100 points. So yes — I came to pay my respects, glass in hand.

🍇 Scene 1 — Morning in the Vines

Barefoot before the mist had even lifted, a champagne-chiffon dress skimming the dew, my fingers reaching for a cluster of Cabernet Sauvignon still cool from the night. The rows of vines stretched out before me like golden corridors, the cypress avenue a shadow on the horizon. There's something almost holy about touching the fruit in that first light — like the estate is still half-asleep and only you get to witness it wake.

🍷 Scene 2 — The Barrel Room Tasting

Down into the cool dark, where the oak barriques stand in perfect symmetry and the air hums with the scent of cedar and dark fruit. Ivory silk slip dress, a low chignon, candlelight trembling on the rim of my glass. I swirled the Sassicaia slowly — watching it stain the glass like crushed velvet — and let that legendary blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Franc unspool across my palate: blackcurrant, rosemary, a mineral slate that lingers. One hundred points has never tasted so quiet.

🥂 Scene 3 — Sunset Toast Over the Estate

By dusk I was on the stone terrace in midnight-blue silk, the whole valley sinking into gold and violet below me, the Tyrrhenian Sea a silver glint at the edge of the world. I raised my glass to the camera — to the land, to the vintage, to this ridiculous, beautiful life — and let the last light catch my silhouette in a rim of fire. Some toasts are for celebration. This one was for gratitude.

✨ Tenuta San Guido Tasting Notes & Travel Tips

  • Wine Featured: Sassicaia 2021 — DOC Bolgheri Sassicaia, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. 100 points (Wine Advocate & Jane Anson).
  • Best Time to Visit: Late August to early October — veraison is finishing, the harvest is weeks away, and the golden light is at its most theatrical.
  • Getting There: Fly into Pisa, drive the coastal road south toward Bolgheri — and don't rush the Viale dei Cipressi. It's the best five minutes of the trip.
  • What to Wear: Flowing fabrics that catch the wind, then something silk for the cellar. The estate rewards elegance, not effort.

💋 The 2021 is already a legend — but it tastes even better poured by candlelight with a view. Next Friday I'm going somewhere that makes even this look humble. Care to guess where? 😉
