Paper Crown (Official Lyric Video)

The founding song, finally on film.

This is where TrailMix Tapes started — September 7th, the debut, the song I'd been carrying around for years but was too scared to finish. About standing in the yard where somebody used to be, and figuring out that the fairytales we grew up on aren't lies. They're just incomplete. The prince doesn't save you. The castle doesn't last. You build your own kingdom from the pieces of the past — cardboard boxes count.

Country-Bright era all the way: acoustic guitar, a little banjo, golden wheat-field light. This video was made from the song's own images — the rusty pickup, the screen door swinging like it did in '99, the one bare nail where the poster hung, the mixtape marked senior year, the cardboard-box kingdom, and a paper crown coming undone on a porch step. Thirteen scenes, every one of them hers.

And watch for the porch light. It's the first appearance of the motif that's run through every era since — here it's on, and nobody's home. By Night One it's asking to be left on. By Front Row, she's the one leaving it on for someone else. It all started here.

The lyrics are timed to the original debut recording — the same sync our nxplace player has used since day one.

Learning that the crown was never yours to keep — just yours to craft.
