Off the Wall — A Friday-Night Two-Step for the Man Who Finally Walked In
There's a little revolution happening on dance floors this fall, and it starts before the band does. Halls all over are running beginner two-step lessons at seven so the band can kick at nine — tonight alone there's a lesson-then-live-band honky-tonk dance over at Glen Echo. And a week back, one of the biggest stars in Nashville slipped unannounced into a Texas honky-tonk just to play old covers for a room of two-steppers. The floors are alive, friend. They're just waiting on the ones still circling the parking lot.
That's who this song's for. Ray's fifty-six, sale-barn hands, boots bought for the occasion — three Fridays of driving by before he finally walked in. He figured the room would judge him. Turns out the room was busy learning, same as him. I wrote the hook out of Miss June's whole doctrine, and mine: hold on loose, the floor'll catch you. And it will.
Come Friday, come two-step.
Lyrics
[Intro]
Three Fridays, Ray circled the gravel lot,
Truck tires tracing the same slow round.
Tonight he kills the engine, opens the door—
Pride costs plenty when your boots hit ground.
[Verse 1]
Ray's fifty-six, a sale-barn hand,
Knows bawling calves and busted gates.
He bought these boots just for the dancing,
Pearl-snap shirt buttoned straight.
At seven, Miss June's beginner lesson
Fills the hall while the band loads in.
Retired schoolteacher, she calls out one-two;
Ray takes a breath and steps within.
She finds him a partner, shows him the box step;
He misses a turn, then tries again.
[Chorus]
Off the wall, one-two, come on in,
Boot heels talking on the boards.
Hold on loose — the floor'll catch you,
And it will, and it will!
Off the wall, one-two, let go,
Pride don't have to call the shots.
Hold on loose — the floor'll catch you,
And it will, and it will!
[Verse 2]
He turns the wrong way twice, then finds it;
A woman grins, "You're doing fine."
Miss June counts steady, patient as a fence line
"Box it around; you're right on time."
Ray's boots catch, then sort it out together,
His partner's laugh helps set the pace.
At nine the band hits fiddle, bass, and piano;
The whole room lights up in place.
He could still turn back to the gravel—
But Ray stays put and takes the song.
[Fiddle Break]
[Verse 3]
On the fiddle's high run, Ray quits counting;
His shoulders turn, his boots swing through.
Across the scuffed pine boards, sawdust skitters,
Beginners learn the step in a shoulder-to-shoulder row.
For three Fridays he braced for folks to judge him,
For three Fridays he circled in his truck.
Nobody looked at him sideways;
They were busy learning, laughing, keeping up.
The hard look he feared had lived inside him;
Tonight it loosens with the tune.
[Final Chorus]
Off the wall, one-two, come on in,
Hold on loose — the floor'll catch you!
And it will, and it will!
Ray leaves his pride in the passenger seat;
He's got a Friday night to live.
[Spoken Outro]
That truck's still out there in the lot.
Ray just won't be circling it tonight.
