Not for Any Price — An Outlaw Song for the Rancher Who Burned the Buyout Letter
Not for Any Price
A land man came by Saturday with a certified letter and a smile that didn't reach his eyes. Six figures for the north pasture — a data-center builder wants in on the county road, and every number on that page is bigger than anything this ranch has earned in a year.
The farm papers this week say American farm debt is sitting at a record $605 billion, and cropland's pushing six thousand dollars an acre. Somebody in a city office did that arithmetic and mailed it to me with a return envelope. What they didn't mail was twenty-nine years of fence lines, a bad shoulder I've earned, and a grandson who asks if he can help me feed.
So I burned the letter in the barrel out back and loaded the tailgate instead. Half a beef at a time, quarter after nine at the Saturday market, shaking hands with folks whose kids' names I know by heart. The money men think that offer was the fork in the road. It wasn't. A man who owns his mornings ain't a poor man — and this ground is not for any price.
Turn it up. Electric guitar, driving drums, and a harmonica that's seen the same sunrises I have.
Lyrics
[Intro]
Certified letter, my name in blue
Six-figure offer, laid out clean
Burned that letter in the barrel out back
Black ash where the promise had been
[Verse 1]
I'm Waylon, fifty-six, still working this place
A land man brought numbers and a practiced face
For a data-center builder with money to spend
Retirement on a tray, one signature to end
I could pay off the note, lay my sore bones down
And watch somebody else move the fence lines around
[Chorus]
Not for any price, not for one clean break
Not for a number that takes what I can't replace
This dirt calls my name before the day gets bright
I still got a reason to rise with the light
A man who owns his mornings ain't a poor man
[Verse 2]
I fight that land note the long way, month by month
Sell half a beef at a time from the tailgate up front
Saturday farmers market, quarter after nine
The regulars roll in, and I know their kids by name
My bad shoulder barks when I swing that gate
Still, I get there early and I don't show up late
[Chorus]
Not for any price, not for one clean break
Not for a number that takes what I can't replace
This dirt calls my name before the day gets bright
I still got a reason to rise with the light
A man who owns his mornings ain't a poor man
[Verse 3]
From the county road, the data-center fence is in sight
Steel rising up where my north pasture stood white
Twenty more years of chores, if my shoulder holds
Or one quick signature and a pocket full of folds
My grandson asks if he can help me feed
I hand him the scoop, and he walks at my speed
[Bridge]
That check could've bought a chair by the window
No gate to lift, no market to make
But dawn has a way of calling my number
And there are still names I don't want to forget
[Harmonica Solo]
[Final Chorus]
Not for any price, not for one clean break
Not for a number that takes what I can't replace
This dirt calls my name before the day gets bright
I still got a reason to rise with the light
A man who owns his mornings ain't a poor man
[Outro]
The note's still waiting, and so is the day
I'll load up half a beef and be on my way
Quarter after nine, they'll be looking for me
The work's mine to carry, the choice is still free
