Josie's song, now with moving pictures. π
There's a diner somewhere off Route 9 with a neon sign that's missing half its letters, and a waitress who fills a mason jar labeled SOMEDAY one tip at a time. I wrote Neon Halo about her β a stranger's story, the first one I ever told on this channel. Now you can watch it in motion: the counter wiped like a runway, the jukebox humming B-sides off a mixtape somebody left behind, the empty highway running out past the one light in town.
And then the bridge β the night the sign went dark, and Josie dragged the kitchen ladder out herself. Twelve feet up, in October, in the cold. Halos aren't handed down. You plug them in yourself.
That's the whole song. That's kind of the whole channel.

[Instrumental Intro β 4 bars acoustic guitar, light banjo]
[Verse 1] Josie runs the second shift at a diner off Route 9 Cherry pie at midnight keeps the truckers in a line There's a mason jar behind the till that says SOMEDAY She drops her tips in one by one like sparks she's saving
[Pre-Chorus] The neon's missing letters but it hums above the door Buzzing like a promise since the day she started there The truckers call her angel when it halos in her hair They don't know, they don't know
[Chorus] She's a neon halo girl in a one-light town Got a someday rattling in a jar she's filling now Everybody says a prayer her light won't burn out But they don't know Josie β she wires the halo herself
[Verse 2] Jukebox hums the B-sides off a mixtape left behind Songs about the leaving that she hums to pass the time She wipes the counter like a runway, clears the plates like shooting stars Name tag stitched in cursive like a marquee for the road
[Bridge β THE TWIST] The night the sign went dark, the whole diner held its breath Josie dragged the kitchen ladder out and took it by herself Twelve feet up in October with her breath out in the smoke Found the wire the storm had broken, and she fixed it in the cold And when that halo flared alive above the parking lot Every trucker finally saw her β every watt of light she's got So if you're waiting on a miracle, look closer at the glow: Halos aren't handed down β you plug them in yourself
[Final Chorus β bigger, ad-libs] She's a neon halo girl in a one-light town Got a someday rattling in a jar she's filling now Everybody says a prayer her light won't burn out But we all know Josie β she plugs it in herself (Plug it in, plug it in) Oh, she plugs it in herself
[Instrumental Outro β fade with acoustic guitar, banjo, a neon sign buzzing]
Verse two has a jukebox playing B-sides off a mixtape somebody left behind. That mixtape is from Paper Crown β the very first song on this channel. It's the oldest thing in my songbook, and it's still riding around in gloveboxes and diners. If you caught it, you're my kind of listener.
