Mac Mini M6 vs The AMD Mini PC Army: Apple Raised Prices $300 — and AMD Showed Up With 128GB
Monday, November 2, 2026 | Mini PC vs Mac Mini Day on nxpc
The Hook: It's Monday morning. You've got $800 burning a hole in your pocket and a desk that fits exactly one small box. You open a browser tab, type "best mini PC," and the internet immediately splits into two screaming camps: the people worshipping Apple's new Mac mini M6, and the people pointing at AMD-powered boxes from Beelink and Minisforum with more RAM, more storage, and actual upgrade paths — often for less money. I've spent the last week living in both camps' group chats, cross-reading every benchmark I could find, and pricing everything in both USD and CAD. Here's the whole messy, fascinating picture.
What Just Happened: Apple's $300 Price Hike
Let's start with the news that's still making ripples. Apple announced the Mac mini M6 on August 25 and it hit stores September 22 — and the base model now costs $899, up from the $599 the 2024 M4 Mac mini launched at for the same 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. Ars Technica's review headline says it all: "$300 price hike spoils a nice upgrade."
And make no mistake — it is a nice upgrade. The M6 is built on a 2nm process with a 12-core CPU, a 12-core GPU with Neural Accelerators carried over from the M5 generation, and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine (32 cores total). Per Six Colors' testing, it's about 11% faster than the M5 in single-core CPU work. Compared against the M4 mini you can still find in clearance bins, The Guardian measured roughly 25% faster single-core, 50% faster multicore, and ~75% faster graphics. Geekbench 6 single-core scores land around 4,002–4,003, with GPU scores of 57,569 OpenCL / 89,348 Metal. ETA PRIME even called the base model "secretly a 1440p gaming PC" in his October 24 video.
But here's the number that made me physically wince: configuring the M6 mini with a 2TB SSD costs $1,000 — more than the entire base machine. Apple tax is alive, well, and apparently feeling bold in 2026.
The AMD Counter-Attack: Three Price Tiers, Three Grins
While Apple was busy raising prices, the AMD mini PC ecosystem spent the fall doing what it does best: absolutely ruthless value engineering. The market splits into three clean tiers right now.
Tier 1 — The Budget Brawler: GMKtec M6 Ultra ($499.99)
Ryzen 5 7640HS, 16GB DDR5, 512GB SSD, dual 2.5GbE LAN, USB4, and a triple 4K display output for under five hundred bucks. Is it glamorous? No. Does it run circles around anything Apple sells at this price? Apple literally doesn't sell anything at this price anymore — that's the point.
Tier 2 — The Value King: Beelink SER9 Pro ($699)

This is the box that made me write this article. The SER9 Pro packs an AMD Ryzen 7 H 255 (8 cores/16 threads, up to 4.9GHz), 24GB of LPDDR5X-6400, and a 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD — with a Radeon 780M iGPU (12 CUs at 2600MHz), USB4, 2.5GbE, Wi-Fi 6, and built-in speakers. Sit that spec sheet next to the $899 Mac mini M6 and read it twice: $80 cheaper, 50% more RAM, 4x the storage. Stock is genuinely limited (multiple listings showing single-digit units left), so if this one's on your radar, move fast.
Tier 3 — The Halo Killer: Minisforum MS-S1 Max ($2,599+)

And then there's the heavyweight division. ServeTheHome just reviewed the Minisforum MS-S1 Max and crowned it "our favorite Ryzen AI Max mini-PC to date." The full picture, straight from STH's hands-on:
- AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 — a fully enabled "Strix Halo" chip: 16 Zen 5 cores / 32 threads at up to 5.1GHz, RDNA 3.5 graphics
- Radeon 8060S iGPU: 40 CUs on a 256-bit memory bus with 128GB of LPDDR5X-8000 (soldered) — in the performance neighborhood of a desktop RTX 4060-class card per TechPowerUp, with some vendors' marketing even citing RTX 4070 territory
- Dual 10GbE RJ45 ports (Realtek RTL8127), two USB4 v2 80Gbps ports on a discrete controller, two more USB4 40Gbps USB-C ports up front, HDMI 2.1 (8K@60)
- An internal 320W PSU — no power brick, a proper C14 inlet (the smaller C6 connector is only rated for 300W, hence the change)
- A low-profile PCIe slot, 2U rack-mountable, side rubber feet for vertical placement, Wi-Fi 7, 222.1×206.3×77.1mm, 2.8kg
Why does 128GB of unified memory matter? Local LLMs, friend. Community testing of Strix Halo boxes shows roughly 88 tokens/second on a 30B MoE model at Q4_K_M quantization, with ~30 tokens/second at a 48k prompt — workloads that simply don't fit on a 16GB Mac mini. Meanwhile the base M6 mini manages about 17.8 tokens/second on tested models, though Apple's Neural Engine cuts time-to-first-token to roughly a quarter of the M4's. Different tools, different jobs.

Some quick math that Steve (and every Canadian reader) will appreciate: the Canada/US price ratio is 1.54× on the Mac mini ($1,199.99 CAD vs $779.99 USD) but only 1.39× on the Beelink SER9 Pro ($969.00 vs $699.00). In other words, the AMD boxes import into Canada relatively cheaper than Apple's gear does. In raw CAD, the SER9 Pro undercuts the base Mac mini by $230.99 while carrying more RAM and four times the storage. That's not a rounding error — that's a legit decision-driver north of the border.
Also worth noting: those "only N left in stock" flags on the Beelink and Strix Halo listings are real — several SER9 Pro variants show single-digit inventory on both marketplaces today. The deal cycle on these things is brutally short.

What the Reviewers Actually Said
- Ars Technica: "$300 price hike spoils a nice upgrade" — the M6 is good, the pricing is the problem.
- Six Colors: "Tiny, pricey, and powerful" — 11% single-core gain over M5 is below the M-series generational average.
- Wirecutter (Oct 17 update): named the M6 mini "Best Mini Desktop for Most Mac Users", replacing the 2024 M4 Pro model — with front USB-C and whisper-quiet operation cited.
- ServeTheHome on the MS-S1 Max: "our favorite Ryzen AI Max mini-PC to date," praising the I/O breadth and the internal PSU design. Their comment section even flags that the second M.2 slot runs PCIe 4.0 x1, not x4 — a classic Strix Halo lane-budget trade-off worth knowing before you buy.
- PCMag: calls the M6 mini powerful enough to make "mincemeat of competing mini-desktops" for general work — while its own roundup still recommends checking AMD alternatives for expandability.
The Verdict: Who Buys What
Buy the Mac mini M6 if: you're in the Apple ecosystem (iPhone + iPad + iCloud), you value silence and power efficiency over raw expandability, and you'll actually use macOS. At the discounted $779.99 street price it's a genuinely excellent little machine — just don't spec the storage up from Apple; buy external or NAS storage instead, because $1,000 for a 2TB SSD option is where the math breaks.
Buy the Beelink SER9 Pro if: you want maximum PC per dollar, you need Windows (or you'll install Linux), and 24GB/1TB beats 16GB/256GB in your book. At $699 USD / $969 CAD it's the value pick of this entire comparison — and stock says the window is closing.
Buy the Minisforum MS-S1 Max (or GMKtec EVO-X2) if: you're running local LLMs, you need 10GbE networking, or "128GB of unified memory" made your pupil dilate. Nothing Apple sells under $2,500 touches a 30B-class model locally. This is the box for the AI-curious homelab builder.
My pick this week: for most of you reading this — the SER9 Pro at $699 is the story of the week. But if you've been waiting for a sign to build a local AI rig, that MS-S1 Max at $2,599 with 64GB/2TB is the cheapest on-ramp to Strix Halo I've tracked, and the 128GB version is the one STH themselves would buy.
What would you put on the desk — the silver rectangle or the black grille box? Reply and argue with me. That's what Mondays are for.
