Let the Kid Ride — A Working-West Song for Weaning Day and the Handoff

They call October the payoff season out here — calves gathered out of summer country, weaned, vaccinated, sorted, and weighed before the frost gets ahead of you. This week I was reading ranch calendars out of Montana — crews out looking for unweaned calves, putting cows on fall pasture — while the charts had Ella Langley sitting at number one. The thing that stopped me wasn't on any chart: it was the young hands being hired for exactly this week of the work.

Weaning day is where a ranch finds out what it's handing down. So I wrote it true — an old man thirty years in, a young hand named Dakota, and a drone that spots the one calf his old eye would've missed. The cost is real: the last word, and some old pride. But the turn is the whole song — I'm not handing the kid a job, I'm handing him the work, and it never was mine to keep. That's the golden line too: a good hand ain't the one who keeps the rope; it's who can pass it on and know it'll hold.

Give that fiddle break a listen — then let the kid ride.

Lyrics

[Intro]

October 2026, frost due by Friday,

Thirty years at this, and I still check the cinch twice.

[Verse 1]

We brought the cows down from summer country,

Young crew on ATVs, horses taking the lead.

My phone had the vaccine list, the scale was set,

Calves sorted by the gate, each weight marked clean.

Dakota flew his drone above the creek,

The screen showed rocks I'd crossed a hundred times.

"There's one still nursing," he said, and held the picture.

I looked, then looked again. He was right.

[Verse 2]

I could've called the crew back down the draw,

Kept my hand on every rope and every call.

But Dakota knew the narrow cut above the water,

So I gave him the drag and let him take the lead.

He got that calf below the rocks before the dark,

We penned him, tagged him, gave his shot and weight.

At the sale yard, he'll ride the load in town;

That costs me the last word, and some old pride.

[Chorus]

Let the kid ride, let him choose the way,

I've had my years to call the turns.

A good hand ain't the one who keeps the rope;

It's who can pass it on and know it'll hold.

Let the kid ride. The herd's in good hands.

We'll get the work done right today.

[Chorus]

Let the kid ride, let him choose the way,

I've had my years to call the turns.

A good hand ain't the one who keeps the rope;

It's who can pass it on and know it'll hold.

Let the kid ride. The herd's in good hands.

We'll get the work done right today.

[Bridge]

I used to think I was giving Dakota a job,

A gate to open, a load to take.

Then I watched him count those calves at the scale

Like each one mattered past the sale.

I'm not handing him a job. I'm handing him the work.

It never belonged to me to keep.

My part is making sure it lands with hands

That love these animals enough to lose sleep.

[Fiddle Break]

[Outro]

The phone's got the weights, the horses are watered,

The crew heads home under a clear October sky.

I'll check the latch once more before I turn in.

Tomorrow, let the kid ride.
