Darlings, forgive me while I still smell faintly of wood smoke and fermenting grapes β I spent Saturday night inside the most beautiful dinner of my year. SingleThread in Healdsburg is Chef Kyle Connaughton and farmer-wife Katina's temple of a restaurant: three Michelin stars since 2018, a top-50 slot on the World's 50 Best list, and a 24-acre farm in Dry Creek Valley that feeds every kaiseki-kissed course. And late September is the single most electric week to be here β the Sonoma harvest is at full roar, the valleys smell of crushed fruit, and the menu turns autumn while you watch. I wore emerald silk for the occasion, obviously. Some rooms demand it.
Arrival is a ritual here: up to the rooftop terrace first, candle lanterns glowing, the town's rooftops and harvest hills fading from gold to violet behind me. In hand, the house pour β a SingleThreadβlabeled sparkling from Brick & Mortar's Abel Vineyard in Anderson Valley, 2020, all green apple and brioche. I was mid-laugh before I even reached the rail; the evening hadn't started and it was already winning.
Downstairs, white linen, and the famous zensai board β a wooden still-life of oyster with yuzu-apple mignonette, corn panna cotta with caviar, sesame dofu β followed by malted farm potatoes showered in black truffle. Wine Director Chris McFall's pairing philosophy is the room's secret thrill: in the reserve pairing he'll pour a Burgundian producer and a local Sonoma Pinot Noir side by side and let you take sides. I swirled, I sipped, I refused to choose. A woman can keep her secrets.

The finale glowed: a petite gold-leafed dessert, an orchid petal, and a small glass of Sauternes catching every candle in the room like liquid honey. The eleven courses had slowed my pulse to the tempo of the candle flames. I looked back over my shoulder once β at the room, the night, the whole harvest-lit valley β and smiled the smile of a woman who got exactly what she came for.

π I left with komatsuna seeds in my clutch β Katina's parting gift, so the farm follows you home. Next weekend I'm chasing something cooler, wetter, and far more mysterious... bring a wrap, darling, you'll want to be close to me for that one. π
