Gold on the Costa: A Private Poolside Tasting at Hotel Cala di Volpe, Sardinia 🍾🌊

Late October on the Costa Smeralda is my favorite kind of secret. The superyachts have mostly drifted away, the crowds have gone home, and the light has turned long and honeyed β€” the whole coastline glowing like the inside of a glass of Vermentino. So when I needed somewhere warm enough to swim and chic enough to feel like a secret, I came back to a place that's been hosting the beautiful and the discreet since 1963: Hotel Cala di Volpe, Porto Cervo β€” the first hotel ever built on this coast, dreamed up by architect Jacques CouΓ«lle as a whitewashed, surrealist fishing village rising out of the granite. James Bond checked in here in The Spy Who Loved Me (1977), and honestly? Mr. Bond had excellent taste in hotel pools. The Aga Khan's consortium carved this coast out of wild Gallura granite in the sixties, and just inland, the same granite and the same dry mistral wind grow Italy's most underrated white grape. Today I'm pouring Capichera β€” the estate that taught the world Vermentino di Gallura could be serious β€” and closing the evening with Sardinia's legendary Cannonau, the antioxidant-rich red behind the island's famous Blue Zone longevity. Bring your appetite for salt, sun, and gold.

πŸ‡ Scene 1 β€” Champagne Silk & a Bottle on Ice

Three in the afternoon, and the pool terrace is all sparkle and quiet. I'm perched sideways on the edge of a cream sunlounger in a champagne-toned one-piece, an ivory linen sarong slipping off one hip, reaching lazily for a glass of Capichera Vermentino di Gallura β€” pale straw-gold, ice-cold, breathing sea breeze. The bottle sweats in its bucket while the October sun throws diamonds across the water. This is what the Italians call dolce far niente β€” and I am extremely committed to the research.

🍷 Scene 2 β€” Wade In, Sip Up

Some tastings happen at a table. The best ones happen waist-deep in an infinity pool with the Tyrrhenian Sea dissolving into the sky. I'm mid-stride through the shallows, coupe of Vermentino held high and dry, golden hour gilding every ripple β€” granite coast ahead, whitewashed arches behind, the mistral that shapes Gallura's wines tangling damp strands of hair across my shoulder. Capichera's estate sits just minutes from this pool in the Arzachena countryside; the Ragnedda family planted Vermentino here in the seventies and bottled their first vintage in 1981, becoming the first to prove this grape could age gracefully in barrique. By 1996, Vermentino di Gallura was elevated to DOCG β€” still Sardinia's one and only DOCG appellation. Salt on my skin, granite-mineral wine on my tongue. Perfection, filed under Tuesday.

πŸ₯‚ Scene 3 β€” Candlelight, Cannonau & No Inhibitions

Dusk pours violet over the water and the candles take over. Wrapped in a backless ivory linen dress that the evening breeze keeps trying to steal, I lift a bottle of Sella & Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva to the flame to watch the garnet glow β€” my ritual with this wine. Cannonau is Sardinia's own name for Grenache, and the island's shepherds have drunk it for centuries; scientists studying Sardinia's Blue Zone (where residents routinely live past 100) point to its sky-high polyphenol content as part of the secret. Sella & Mosca, farming at Alghero since 1899, makes the benchmark Riserva β€” warm, dried-herb, cherry-skin generous. The second bottle breathes on the stone table. The first one didn't survive the evening. Longevity, you see β€” I intend to live forever.

✨ Hotel Cala di Volpe Tasting Notes & Travel Tips

  • Wine Featured: Capichera Vermentino di Gallura DOCG (β‰₯95% Vermentino; granite-soil, mistral-wind Gallura; the estate that pioneered barrel-aged Vermentino, first vintage 1981) + Sella & Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva DOC (Cannonau = Sardinian Grenache; famously high in polyphenols; estate founded 1899 in Alghero)
  • Best Time to Visit: Late September–October β€” the "local season": warm swimmable days (~20–23Β°C), golden low-angle light, and the jet-set crowds gone home
  • Getting There: Fly into Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport (OLB); Porto Cervo is a scenic 35-minute drive β€” Cala di Volpe sits on its own calm cove just south of town
  • What to Wear: Champagne-toned swimwear, a sheer linen cover-up you can lose gracefully, and gold everything β€” then a backless linen dress for candlelight. Trust me on the dress.

πŸ’‹ Bond stayed here in '77 and thought he was the dangerous one. Cute. I'll let you guess which of us got the last glass of Cannonau β€” and where next week's bottle is breathing. Stay thirsty, darling… πŸ₯‚
