Gold in the Galets: A Signature Harvest Friday at ChΓ’teau de Beaucastel ππ₯
Darlings, I finally did it β after sixty-two chapters of this wine-soaked diary, I saved the one region I've somehow never kissed: the southern RhΓ΄ne. And I didn't arrive quietly. I arrived at the absolute peak of the season β late September, harvest week in ChΓ’teauneuf-du-Pape, when the Grenache hangs heavy and dusty-blue on century-old vines and the whole plateau smells of warm fruit, wild thyme and sun-baked stone. My destination: ChΓ’teau de Beaucastel, the legendary Famille Perrin estate β a biodynamic pioneer, a member of the Primum Familiae Vini, and the only house that pours all thirteen permitted grape varieties into its red blend, with a lovingly generous hand of MourvΓ¨dre.
The secret here is under your feet. The vineyards are carpeted with galets roulΓ©s β those famous large, rounded stones, left by ancient Alpine floods, that drink up the day's heat and breathe it back into the vines at night. Walking them at dawn feels like crossing a field of warm, sleeping eggs. Sensory overload, in the best possible way.
π Scene 1 β Morning in the Vines, Mist on the Pebbles
I slipped on my flowing blush-pink silk maxi dress and walked the rows barefoot before the mist had fully lifted β hem brushing the ochre soil, one hand trailing across clusters so ripe they practically purred. The vine lines pulled my eyes straight toward the chΓ’teau's soft silhouette, and every galet underfoot glowed like amber in the low sun. This is what morning should always taste like: dew, dust, and possibility.
π· Scene 2 β An Afternoon Among the Foudres
By late afternoon I'd changed into an ivory silk slip dress and followed the cellar master down into the cool heart of the estate β a cathedral of massive old oak foudres, where Beaucastel's wines slumber in large wood rather than small barrels, the better to let that stony terroir speak. We tasted the 2022 ChΓ’teauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Roussanne Vieilles Vignes β one hundred percent very old Roussanne, harvested slightly over-ripe, scored a dazzling 96 by Vinum β cedar, lemon peel, ripe pear, spring blossom, a whisper of verbena. Then the red: garnet in the glass, garrigue and dark cherry, silk with a spine. I swirled, I inhaled, I may have batted my eyelashes at a wine. No regrets.

π₯ Scene 3 β The Sunset Toast, Gold to Violet
For the finale: an emerald gown, a stone terrace, and the whole valley doing that nightly RhΓ΄ne thing where gold melts into violet. I raised a glass of the Beaucastel red toward the far hill where the papal village keeps its watch, the evening breeze carrying thyme and cooling stone, the vineyard rows below us fading into blue haze like a rumpled velvet blanket. Some views you photograph. This one you drink in β slowly, with someone who makes you laugh.

β¨ ChΓ’teau de Beaucastel β Tasting Notes & Travel Tips
- Wine Featured: ChΓ’teau de Beaucastel ChΓ’teauneuf-du-Pape Blanc Roussanne Vieilles Vignes 2022 (100% very old Roussanne β rare in the RhΓ΄ne, rarer in ChΓ’teauneuf) alongside the estate's classic red blend of all 13 permitted varieties, MourvΓ¨dre-forward and aged in foudres.
- Best Time to Visit: Late September β peak harvest on the ChΓ’teauneuf plateau. You'll smell fermentation in the air and see sorting tables humming; book tastings well ahead, the estate takes a limited number of visitors.
- Getting There: The village of ChΓ’teauneuf-du-Pape sits between Orange and Avignon in the southern RhΓ΄ne β about 15 minutes north of Orange by car, and an easy base for exploring Gigondas, Vacqueyras and the estate's little sister wine, Coudoulet de Beaucastel.
- What to Wear: A flowy maxi dress for the vines (mornings are misty-cool, the stones warm fast), flats you don't mind dusting in galets β and save the backless emerald gown for the terrace. Trust me.
π Sixty-two destinations and this valley still made me weak in the knees β that mistral breeze isn't the only thing that leaves you breathless here. Next week I trade pebbles for barrels of a different kindβ¦ somewhere the fog rolls in off the Pacific and the Pinot is worth the chill. Dress warmly, and follow me. π
