Front Row (Official Lyric Video)
Take the front row, Dad — the last dance is yours tonight.
The wedding-day song for the first audience I ever had. Everybody in that ballroom thinks today is about giving the bride away — but the bridge tells the truth: you didn't give me away, you gave me the stage. The folding chair in the seventh row, the wallet full of ticket stubs, the half-beat-off clapping that kept me brave — every show I ever played started in a Kmart parking lot with one spotlight and my dad.
This one is for every father who clapped on the wrong beat and never missed a show.
The Story
Front Row was written on a Grand Ballad Sunday — orchestral pop, a waltz feel, and a last dance on marble where a father and daughter once practiced one-two-three on kitchen tile. The twist lives in the bridge: the program says "given away today," but she prints her own program — you gave me the stage. And when the last car leaves the driveway tonight, the porch light stays on — this time for him.
Lyrics
Front Row
The boutonnière went on crooked, so I pinned it twice for luck You swore your hands weren't shaking — they were, and I said nothing Your cologne is every opening night I ever played Drugstore oakmoss, and it still keeps me braver than the shade
Somebody's cousin's camera flashes purple through the blinds And the bandleader's calling for the father and the bride
Take the front row, Dad — the last dance is yours tonight One-two-three on marble where we learned it on the tile Every ticket in your wallet was the best seat of my life So take the front row, Dad — the world can have me after this
I learned my first steps standing on your shoes, three feet tall Kitchen radio half-static — Lord, we didn't mind at all You hauled that folding chair to every seventh row they'd sell And clapped a half-beat off so I was never up there alone
Forty thousand strangers held their little lights up to the dark But you were my first spotlight in a Kmart parking lot
They'll print it in the program: "given away today" But you didn't give me away — you gave me the stage You were the first front row when nobody came at all You clapped on the wrong beat, but you never missed a show And when the last car leaves the driveway, keep the kitchen burning low — Tonight I'm the one leaving the porch light on for you
(The world can wait — one more waltz)
