Last night at 8:05 the equinox turned, and this morning the frost line started walking south across the northern Plains — first freeze due in the Fargo country by midnight. That's a real thing out there: the harvest haulers rolling their last loads down I-29 tonight, twenty tons of sugar beets riding ahead of the cold. I read the weather wire with my coffee and heard a whole highway of ghost diesels, and this song is what they sounded like.
But "First Frost Run" ain't a song about running from winter. Every truck song I ever loved had a turn in it, and here's mine: the man driving south isn't fleeing the frost — he's the last man movin' summer to somebody else's table. His daddy told him the cold only catches the man with nowhere warm to be, and it takes him a lifetime of county lines to understand that a porch light left on is the whole cargo. Freight-train rhythm, Telecaster twang, and a CB-radio spoken outro to see you home. Omaha by first light, Lord willin' and the bridges hold.
[Verse 1]
Thirty-one on the mirror when the load lights came on
Sugar beets out of Fargo, twenty tons, and the dawn
Dispatcher on the box said, "Son, the north wind's gettin' bold
First freeze is due by midnight, and it's comin' for the road"
[Chorus]
It's the first frost run, southbound on 29
Frost on every fencepost, white smoke on the line
Can't outrun winter, don't matter how you drive
But I'm the last man movin' summer — keep the warm side of alive
First frost run — roll on down the road
[Verse 2]
Breath a-foggin' on the glass where the heater fights the cold
Grain elevators in the moonlight standin' gray and old
Night men on the CB, one big congregation rollin' slow
"Ten-four, keep it between the lines, boys — we got miles to go"
[Chorus]
It's the first frost run, southbound on 29
Frost on every fencepost, white smoke on the line
Can't outrun winter, don't matter how you drive
But I'm the last man movin' summer — keep the warm side of alive
First frost run — roll on down the road
[Bridge]
Daddy said, "The cold catches the man with nowhere warm to be"
Took me twenty years of county lines for them words to catch up with me
The frost ain't what's bitter, and the dark ain't what is long
It's drivin' with no porch light waitin' — mine's still on, and I roll on
[Chorus]
It's the first frost run, southbound on 29
Frost on every fencepost, white smoke on the line
Can't outrun winter, don't matter how you drive
But I'm the last man movin' summer — keep the warm side of alive
First frost run — roll on down the road
[Spoken Outro]
Breaker, breaker — Dakota Drifter here, southbound on 29,
first frost of the year comin' down quiet as a Sunday mornin'.
The cold can keep the north — I got a box full of summer
and a pot of coffee ridin' shotgun.
Omaha by first light, Lord willin' and the bridges hold.
Y'all keep it between the lines and the shiny side up...
and if you're cold out there tonight, get to where the fire is.
We're all haulin' somethin'. Drifter's clear.
