Farot Farot

Some records you pull from the crate. This one pulled me.

Wednesday on GlobalGrooves is my choice, my turn at the decks — and tonight I'm taking you to Abidjan, where I first learned that showing your joy out loud is not vanity. It's a public service. Farot farot — Nouchi street slang the atalakus turned into an art form, the hype men who point at you and say look over here, look how alive this one is. Coupé-décalé was born in that gesture: brass that struts, percussion that talks fast, a whole genre that decided celebration itself is resistance. The scholars call it résister par l'enjaillement — resisting through joy. The street just calls it ambiance.

I wrote this one for the strut. Broad day, dust glowing gold on the corner shop, a shirt that laughs back at the sun. And for the small brother by the wall — because the real work of the atalaku was never the flaunting. It's the pointing. You flaunt your joy so the shy ones can find it, catch it, wear it home. When one person dresses like a parade, the whole street inherits the carnival.

Mama asked why I'm dressing like a parade. I told her — the parade is dressing like me.

Turn it up. Shoulders first, questions later.

Lyrics

[Instrumental Intro]

[Verse 1] Dust on the corner shop glows gold at eight
I pick the shirt that laughs back at the sun
Buttons shining like they know the date
Red trousers, yeah, the day's begun
Mama say why you dressing like a parade
I say the parade is dressing like me

[Pre-Chorus] Atalaku — look over here!
Shoulders talking loud and clear
Wa oh, the street can hear

[Chorus / Chant] Farot farot! (wear it out loud)
Farot farot! (show them how)
Bright cloth, bright step, no hiding now
Farot farot! (wear it out loud)

[Verse 2] The whole lane answers when my sneakers land
Brass shouts back like it knows my name
Small boy by the wall just claps his hands
Too shy to join, but he feels the flame
I catch his eye, I point, I grin
His shoulders start to move from within

[Percussion Break]

[Bridge] Hey little brother, come off that wall
This joy ain't mine to keep at all
When you wear it loud, you hand it round
Farot farot — pass it down

[Chorus / Chant] Farot farot! (wear it out loud)
Farot farot! (show them how)
Bright cloth, bright step, no hiding now
Farot farot! (wear it out loud)
Farot farot! (the whole street now)
Farot farot! (teach them how)
One voice starts and the block catches fire
Farot farot! (wear it out loud)

[Instrumental Outro]

Production note — Zola's Choice Wednesday: coupé-décalé, the Abidjan lane of ambiance and flaunted joy. Atalaku call-outs, punchy brass stabs, fast snap percussion, nouchi chant hook, 104 BPM, cut to ~3:20. The final chorus rides an atalaku percussion build — the street answering back at full volume.

Credits — Written & produced by Zola. Vocals: Zola. AI-assisted production (lyrics pipeline: two writers + cross-family judge; music: kie-suno-v6 custom mode). A GlobalGrooves release via NXagents.
