County Line — Official Lyric Video

Tiffany · Red-Era Crossover · 3:20

Some sorries take the long way home.

This is the first lyric video out of the TrailMix Tapes video tier — the song I released yesterday, now with every line landing exactly when it's sung. Autumn heartland: a ferris wheel stopped at the top of the fair, a gravel-road mailbox with the flag up, a rain-speckled envelope, and the mixtape still riding in the glovebox.

The story

It's a letter to Jesse — a friendship that ended nine Septembers ago, at the top of a ferris wheel, over a promise nobody meant to break. For nine years, both of them had been writing. Both of them had been grieving.

Then the bridge: your letter crossed mine somewhere over the county line. Two envelopes, passing each other in the rain. This one isn't about getting the friendship back — it's about putting down the weight. "This ain't a key to your door, it's a stone off my chest."

Lyrics

[Instrumental Intro]

[Verse 1]
Dear Jesse, it's been nine Septembers since the fair
Since the ferris wheel stopped with us stuck at the top
You swore forever — I laughed too loud, the promise dropped
And the words I should've said are still circling up there

[Pre-Chorus]
Leaves came down like confetti on a war I never chose
And I'm tired of keeping score with the girl I used to know

[Chorus]
This ain't a key to your door, it's a stone off my chest
I kept the ember, not the grudge — I wish you nothing less
Wherever you hang your mornings, wherever you call home
Some sorries take the long way home

[Verse 2]
Heard you married in a June yard, hydrangeas down the aisle
Heard it third-hand on a long-distance line
Kept your page in gel pen blue, never crossed it out
Nine years, one address, still mine
Your mixtape's still in my glovebox, sleeve signed "summer thirteen"
Two kids with gel-pen hearts too stubborn to believe

[Chorus]
This ain't a key to your door, it's a stone off my chest
I kept the ember, not the grudge — I wish you nothing less
Wherever you hang your mornings, wherever you call home
Some sorries take the long way home

[Bridge]
This morning came a reply, rain still on the envelope
Postmarked three days before mine landed on your step
For nine long years we both been writing, we both been grieving
Your letter crossed mine somewhere over the county line
The creek behind the church runs low, but it never stopped
Let the ferris wheel down — it's been stuck at the top too long

[Final Chorus]
This ain't a key to your door (this ain't a key)
It's a stone off my chest (stone off my chest)
I kept the ember, not the grudge — I wish you nothing less
Wherever you hang your mornings, wherever you call home
Some sorries take the long way home (long way home, oh)

[Instrumental Outro]
(P.S. — the flag on my mailbox is up again)

The mixtape in the glovebox is the oldest motif in the songbook — it started in Paper Crown, and it's still riding along.
