Buda Castle Uncorked: Sofie Takes the 35th Budapest Wine Festival by Storm — With St. Andrea's Volcanic Elixirs

The Danube glitters below and the September air carries that unmistakable buzz of a wine world reunion. I'm at the 35th Budapest Wine Festival, held across four days (September 9–12, 2026) within the limestone ramparts of Buda Castle — a UNESCO World Heritage site turned into Hungary's most magnificent open-air tasting room. Between the Savoy Terrace and the Fisher Children's Terrace, over two hundred winemakers have gathered, but my heart — and my palate — are laser-focused on one name: St. Andrea of Eger.

Founded in 2002 by the legendary Dr. György Lőrincz — a man who left the state cooperative to chase a 1.5-hectare dream — St. Andrea has since become the benchmark for Hungarian fine wine. Their single-vineyard Bikavérs from the volcanic Nagy-Eged hill have redefined what Bull's Blood can be. And I'm about to taste the proof firsthand.

🍇 Scene 1 — The Exhibition Floor: Meeting Dr. Lőrincz

The Savoy Terrace buzzes under high vaulted ceilings — a symphony of clinking glasses, rapid-fire Hungarian, and the low hum of business deals being struck over spittoons. I glide through in a cream silk blouse, charcoal trousers, and my trusty navy blazer — polished, professional, but with a glint in my eye that says I know exactly what I'm looking for.

At the St. Andrea booth, I find him: Dr. György Lőrincz, silver-haired and steady-handed, pouring the Hangács Egri Bikavér Grand Superior 2022. We lock eyes over a swirl of garnet, and suddenly the noise of the hall fades. "The drought concentrated everything," he tells me, his voice weathered with four decades of volcanic soil. "The grapes were pea-sized. The wine became poetry." I lean in closer. Tell me more, Maestro.

🍷 Scene 2 — The Private Masterclass: Boldogságos in the Glass

An hour later, I slip away to a private tasting suite tucked behind the Lion's Court. Here, the light is softer — ivory linen curtains diffuse the afternoon sun into something almost devotional. I've changed into a burgundy silk wrap dress. On the table: one bottle of St. Andrea Boldogságos Egri Csillag Grand Superior 2023, a crystal Riedel stem, and silence.

The wine is a revelation. Hárslevelű, Furmint, Olaszrizling, and Sauvignon Blanc — all from the single Boldogságos vineyard, all fermented with native yeasts. 92 Falstaff points. Green pear on the nose, then that unmistakable volcanic signature: a salty-mineral finish that tingles on the tongue like a secret. I close my eyes and let the wine do the talking. This is why I'm here. Not just to taste — to understand.

🥂 Scene 3 — The Evening Gala: Champagne & Chandeliers

Night falls, and the Fisher Children's Terrace transforms. Crystal chandeliers cast honeyed light over the stone parapets. The Budapest skyline stretches below like a jewel box — the Chain Bridge aglow, Parliament's dome lit gold. I step out in a champagne silk gown with a daring slit, diamond drops catching every flicker of candlelight.

A flute of Kreinbacher Prestige Brut — Hungary's finest traditional-method sparkling — finds my hand. Around me, the who's-who of Central European wine royalty: sommeliers from Vienna, négociants from Bordeaux, a Tokaj legend holding court by the balustrade. I catch the eye of a Burgundian buyer who watched my masterclass earlier. "You have a palate," he says. "Come to Beaune." I raise my glass. You first — have you tried the Hangács?
