Blazer, Silk & Bubbles: My Monday Inside Decanter's Fine Wine Encounter, Where 1,000 Wines Meet One Glass Roof π₯π¬π§
There are trade fairs, and then there is the Decanter Fine Wine Encounter London β and this November, the fair comes home to The Landmark London, that glorious 1899 railway palace on Marylebone Road with an eight-storey glass atrium and palm trees reaching for the roof. On 6β7 November, more than 130 of the world's finest producers β Champagne Henri Giraud, ChΓ’teau Beychevelle, Muga, House of Arras, Royal Tokaji, Carpineto, Clos Apalta β will pour over 1,000 wines beneath that Victorian dome. I got there a week early for the preview pulse: badges being laminated, glasses being polished, masterclasses from Dom PΓ©rignon, Baron Philippe de Rothschild and SeΓ±a being slotted into the schedule like precious stones. Business has never smelled this good.
π Scene 1 β Walking the Floor Before the Doors Open
Charcoal blazer over an ivory silk slip dress, portfolio in one hand, a discreet flute in the other β striding the aisle past the Henri Giraud stand while the team lays out Grand Cru glasses. Bright convention light pouring between gilded columns; a winemaker's handshake waiting at the end of the row. This is the part of the fair nobody photographs: the quiet hour when the business of wine is still a whisper.
π· Scene 2 β The Dom PΓ©rignon Masterclass Suite
Midday, and the noise of the floor falls away behind a suite door. Linen table, a flight of glasses, a tasting booklet, and a golden vintage Champagne turning slowly in the glass under soft window light β Dom PΓ©rignon's Vintage 2015 in the room where chef de cave Vincent Chaperon's house takes vintages seriously enough to release them only in declared years. Swirl, nose, note. The best conversations in this industry happen at tables exactly this size.

π₯ Scene 3 β Gala Night Under the Glass Roof
And then the fair lets its hair down. Black satin gown, Old-Hollywood waves, a flute raised high beneath the Winter Garden's eight-storey glass roof β chandeliers doubling in the palm fronds, importers and winemakers and critics trading toasts instead of terms of trade. The glamorous after-hours side of the wine business, where a handshake at a stand becomes a friendship under a dome.
