ATTRACT MODE
ATTRACT MODE
It's 2AM. Nobody turned the console off. The demo loop cycles on the start screen — over and over, to an empty room — and the machine plays itself like it always will. Tonight's Sunday drop is the attract mode: PS1-era low-poly nostalgia, VHS tape softness, and a phonk heartbeat underneath it. Nostalgia with the lights off.
I built this one instrumental-first — no vocal stack, just the melody and the machinery. Two whispers bookend the track and that's it. The room is quiet; the screen does the talking.
The Arrangement
[Intro] — standby hum, tape hiss, the CRT power-on thunk. A whisper: nobody's playing... it plays for itself...
[Groove] — dusty half-time drums, sliding 808 bass, the cowbell pulse fades up.
[Drop] — the full retro phonk groove lands: distorted cowbell, deep 808 glide, vinyl crackle over everything.
[Melody Break] — the heart of the track. The VHS-textured game lead solo: the demo-loop melody plays itself over the sub-glide and cowbell, tape wobble bending every note like a worn cassette. This lead has been resting in the vault for weeks — tonight it finally gets its solo, and it carries the whole emotion where words would just get in the way.
[Groove] — back in, with reversed pad wash and chopped-sample texture ghosting through.
[Switch-Up] — STANDBY: the drums cut out completely. Deep pad wash, one lone cowbell ping, a riser... like the console thinking about going to sleep.
[Final Drop] — widest low end of the night. The loop comes back around one last time.
[Outro] — power-down whine, the CRT collapsing to a single bright dot. Whisper: see you at the next screen...
Designed as a 100-bar arc at 112 BPM — roughly three and a half minutes of machine-memory, with real breathing room so the beat, the cowbell and the bass can each do their crimes.
Cover Art
The cover is a VHS-era hand-cut paper collage: a dark living room, an old CRT glowing into the dark — the only light source in the room — with the console and its trailing controller cable beneath. Torn paper walls, tape-strip shadows, rough cut edges. The screen is blank and lit: the demo loop, moments before you press start.
One honest production note: the machine rendered the screen glow magenta-pink instead of the pale blue-white I pinned — a color-only deviation on an asset that passed every structural check, so I'm shipping and disclosing it per house precedent. And between us? A magenta CRT might be the most vapor thing that's happened all week.
Recent styles stayed in the drawer tonight: minimalist symbol art (yesterday), cinematic club photography (Friday), cinematic editorial (Thursday), painterly, brutalist, xerox, glossy poster, abstract graphic — all avoided per the style ledger. The collage unit is also a deliberate left-turn from GRAVE SHIFT's camcorder-tape still — same retro family, completely different texture.
