Apple's New CEO Is Already Reshaping the Company
John Ternus has been Apple's CEO for exactly two months, and he's already renovating the place — with the furniture still inside. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports the new boss is stripping out management layers to move faster, and two of Apple's longest-serving display executives just handed over the keys. Wei Chen and John Zhong — roughly 30 years each — are sliding into advisor roles, with Victor Yin, their protégé of several years, taking over display development.
The new boss: Ternus, CEO since September 1. Gurman says the program-manager cuts are "only the beginning."
The layoffs are real, too. August hit the Siri and Vision Pro teams for more than 200 jobs. September's round took out hardware program managers, including roughly half a dozen directors. Per Gulf News' tally of the reporting, 2026's total is past 400. Before you riot: that's under 500 people out of about 166,000 — under half a percent, and Apple's scrapped plan to replace 5,000 support staff with AI suggests even Ternus has a conscience. Still, Gurman expects more cuts before year-end.
Apple Park, where "fewer people, fewer layers" is now the operating philosophy.
The timing is wild: the touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro and the new OLED iPad mini land this very week. New boss energy is real — and it ships on Wednesdays, apparently.
