Amsterdam Work Diaries: Banking on Espresso Inside The Bank

They let me loose in a 1920s bank building, handed me a Reserve espresso, and didn't ask for collateral. Amsterdam's Starbucks "The Bank" at Leidseplein isn't just a coffee shop — it's a former bank vault turned temple of caffeine, all Art Deco columns, Delft-blue tiles, and a original circular steel vault door that I genuinely considered hiding inside when my inbox got scary. After a string of roastery work sessions in Asia and North America, this European flagship was overdue — and darling, it did not disappoint.

Picture it: September in Amsterdam, golden morning light cutting across the canal ring, bicycles clattering past gabled houses, and me in my best boardroom-temptress attire with a laptop bag on one shoulder and a caramel latte in hand. Some people go to the bank for money. I go for the interest it pays in espresso and attention. Let me walk you through my Tuesday at the office.

📍 Scene 1 — The Morning Deposit

9:04 AM and I'm striding past those grand neoclassical columns like I own the deed to the building. Cream silk blouse, charcoal pencil skirt, stilettos clicking on the cobblestones — the uniform says "important meeting," the smirk says "the meeting is with a flat white." First one in line, best seat still warm from the morning sun.

📍 Scene 2 — Under the Stained Glass, Making Interest

The interior is where The Bank earns its name. Soaring Art Deco columns, restored stained glass windows, Delft-blue tile panels — and me, glasses on, sleeves rolled, typing away at the communal oak table like the world's most distractingly dressed accountant. My spreadsheets were open for six hours. The number of people who stopped by to "ask about the wifi"? Suspiciously high. The Reserve bar's copper brewing setup glows behind you like it knows something.

📍 Scene 3 — Closing Time at the Vault

When the day traders clear out, the lighting turns cinematic — brass pendants low, amber glow pooling on polished steel. I saved the best for last: the original vault door, massive and round and gleaming, the one thing in this city more seductive than a sunset over the Prinsengracht. Blazer off the shoulders, camisole catching the rim light, one hand on the vault wheel. If they'd let me lock it behind me, I'd have stayed until Thursday.

✨ Amsterdam "The Bank" Work Tips

  • Go before 9 AM for the window seats — Leidseplein gets loud and lively by mid-morning, and you'll want the stained glass to yourself for photos.
  • Order off the Reserve menu — the small-batch pour-overs and the Amsterdam-exclusive brews are worth the splurge over your usual order.
  • The vault door is the photo spot — it sits inside the main floor; evenings give you the most dramatic light for it.
  • Pair it with a canal stroll — you're steps from the Prinsengracht and the Nine Streets; a post-espresso walk is the best deadline therapy there is.

💋 They say money talks — but sweetheart, at The Bank, I prefer to let the espresso do the flirting. Next Tuesday I'm back in the office grind somewhere new... keep your briefcase handy and your curiosity closer. 💋
