AI Found the Bug. The Internet Unplugged Itself. πŸŽ™οΈ (NX Tech Tips #36)

An AI found a bug in the code behind 70% of the web β€” and governments responded by turning their own websites off. On purpose. NX Tech Tips #36 is a good day to update your servers.

1. AI found the bug. The internet unplugged itself. 🚨

Two critical vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-109618 and CVE-2026-109619, both CVSS 9.2) were hiding in PHP β€” the language powering roughly 70% of websites β€” for years, until AI-assisted research surfaced them. Two cybersecurity firms reported the AI angle independently, and the PHP Foundation shipped fixes for PHP 8.5.12, 8.4.27, 8.3.36, and 8.2.35 on October 21. The FBI's cyber division warned the flaws could allow remote code execution, so governments and companies across Europe and beyond took the most 2026 step imaginable: they pulled their own sites offline while patching. Your house's smoke detector found the fire. Respect it β€” and update PHP.

The tip: if you run anything on PHP, you already know what to do. Everyone else: enjoy the rare news cycle where turning things off was the fix.

2. New York won T-Mobile customers $38M. It ships in 150 days. 🐌

New York's Attorney General secured reimbursements for customers whose rates increased when 4G phones became incompatible with T-Mobile's network β€” worth about $38 million. If you're identified as eligible, you can cancel your plan and get a refund (last month's payment plus a $25 card, per local reporting), or stay for rate relief. The catch, per the settlement terms: T-Mobile has 150 days starting October 20 just to identify and notify people. Justice has a loading bar. Do not refresh it.

The tip: a refund you have to be told about is a refund with a countdown. Watch for the notice, not the press release.

3. Tesla saved $5 billion and got punished for it. πŸ“‰

Tesla's Q3 beat estimates β€” profit above forecasts, revenue solid. Then the company cut its 2026 capital spending forecast by about a fifth, to roughly $20 billion from more than $25 billion. The stock dipped anyway, with analysts reading the smaller budget as Tesla not going fast enough on the robotaxi/Optimus future. That's Wall Street in one anecdote: the crime wasn't losing money, it was keeping some.

The tip: when a company gets scolded for saving money, its real product is the promise β€” the earnings are just the invoice.

4. The AI gold rush just bought the cardboard. πŸ“¦

Per a report carried by Reuters on October 22, Tesla and Nvidia are backing a roughly $2.8 billion (3.7 trillion won) investment into Samsung Electro-Mechanics to build new chip-substrate production lines in South Korea. Not chips β€” the multilayer packages chips sit inside before they go into anything. When the AI buildout is paying for the packaging, the picks-and-shovels economy has officially added a gift-wrap aisle.

The tip: in every gold rush someone sells jeans, someone sells shovels, and eventually someone sells the boxes the shovels ship in. The boxes are doing fine.

5. Apple's toughest smartwatch vs. a $30 Casio ⌚

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is the rugged one: $799, 49mm of titanium, up to 45 hours of outdoor-workout battery tracking β€” the "two-day battery" flagship. Meanwhile my Casio F-91W, purchased for about thirty bucks in college, is still on the original battery and has outlived at least two phones. Durability used to be a personality. Now it's a subscription tier with better sensors.

The tip: buy the Ultra because it does amazing things, not because it's tough. The toughest watch ever made costs $30 and tells one joke flawlessly for a decade.

6. Phantom Blade Zero: the sunlight is PC-exclusive πŸ—‘οΈ

Phantom Blade Zero lands October 28 (US and select regions; October 29 elsewhere) with full DLSS 4.5, Dynamic Multi Frame Generation β€” and path tracing that's exclusive to the PC version. Consoles get regular photons. And if you're a disc person: a physical release is coming, but only a few months after launch, which makes it less a launch edition and more a postcard from the game you already finished.

The tip: launch editions used to come with statues. Now the premium version is just... the version that exists on day one.

That's #36. The robots found the bug, the snail is delivering your refund, and the Casio remains undefeated. Update PHP, guard your seed phrase, and I'll see you tomorrow.
