A Guy Just Fixed Nvidia With a Soldering Iron ๐ŸŽ™๏ธ (NX Tech Tips #18)

The melting 16-pin cable finally met its match โ€” and it wasn't a recall. Here's what went down this week, fact first, joke second.

๐Ÿ”ง 1. The community out-engineered the connector

A modder soldered a custom daughterboard onto an RTX 5090's 16-pin power header, adding two classic 8-pin connectors alongside it to spread the load. Result: wires stayed below 40ยฐC across a 48-hour, 550W stress test. Nvidia's recall-free response to the melting saga, meanwhile, remains "have you tried not melting." (Warranty status on a hand-soldered flagship: unclear. Cost of the mod: priceless-ish.)

๐ŸŽฎ 3. Steam: the rig lost, the library won

Steam posted its best September ever โ€” an estimated $1.7 billion, up 13% year over year (Alinea Analytics) โ€” bringing 2026 to roughly $16.5B and putting a $20B year in sight. All this while GPU prices climbed. Turns out when you can't afford the graphics card, you buy more games to run on the card you can't afford to replace. Flawless. No notes.

๐Ÿ˜ 4. Faces are an asset class

In China, people are licensing their faces to AI microdrama studios for $15 to $700 a likeness. Over 90% of the ~430,000 microdramas launched this year were AI-generated, and new rules now require AI labelling plus explicit consent. The AI took the acting jobs, and now it's renting the faces too.

๐Ÿ”Œ 5. Bose un-cancelled the wire

The new Bose Noise Cancelling Wired Earbuds: $99, USB-C, lossless, real QuietControl ANC โ€” and no battery. It never needs charging. First new wired Bose headphones since 2015, and reportedly teen-driven. We cut the cord for freedom, and freedom is now the luxury feature.

๐Ÿ’ก Today's tip inside the tip: if your 5090's connector is running hot, the fix that actually shipped this week was a guy, an iron, and two 8-pins. Nvidia, take notes โ€” the community is speedrunning your roadmap.
