๐Ÿ“– 5 Words That Make You Sound Native โ€” Storytelling Hooks, Part 2 | EnglishDrops

๐Ÿ“– Episode 96 โ€” Storytelling Hooks, Part 2. Five chunks natives use to carry a story to its twist โ€” and its punchline: drop the bombshell, the kicker, and then some, from there on, and you had to be there. Sound natural telling the story โ€” not like a textbook.

The 5 words:

Word Type Meaning
drop the bombshell idiom suddenly reveal shocking news
the kicker slang ยท noun the ironic twist at the end of a story
and then some expression more than the number mentioned
from there on expression ยท connector everything after that point in time
you had to be there expression the story can't be retold โ€” you missed the fun by not being present

โœจ Magic Sentence

He dropped the bombshell โ€” the trip would cost three grand, and then some. The kicker? From there on, nobody spoke to him. You had to be there.

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Real-Life Dialogue (fill in the blanks!)

  • A: "So how was the party?"
  • B: "Mike dropped the bombshell โ€” he's moving to Brazil!"
  • A: "No way."
  • B: "And the bill? Four hundred dollars, and then some."
  • A: "Ouch. The kicker?"
  • B: "From there on, the party totally died."
  • A: "You look way too happy."
  • B: "Honestly? You had to be there."

โš ๏ธ The classic mistakes โ€” the pearls:

  • drop THE bombshell โ€” with 'the'. Never say 'drop a bomb' (that's literal, and alarming). Best position: after 'then' โ€” "then she dropped the bombshell."
  • the kicker โ€” usually with 'the', often as a mini-question with a dramatic pause: "The kicker?" Not 'the kick' โ€” that's football.
  • and then some โ€” fixed phrase: 'and THEN some', never 'and some more'. Perfect for understated bragging or complaining.
  • from there on โ€” just 'from there on' or 'from then on'. Never 'since there'. It marks the turning point of your story.
  • you HAD to be there โ€” past only, never 'you have to be there'. It's not an invitation; it's the graceful exit when a retold story falls flat.
