Episode 82 — Small Talk, Level Up ☕
Five chunks natives use to open, fill, and win a light conversation — level up your small talk game:
- strike up (phrasal verb) — to start a conversation with someone. "She struck up a chat with the guy next to her on the flight." ⚠️ strike UP a conversation — never "strike a conversation" or "strike on".
- break the ice (idiom) — to say or do something that relieves the awkwardness when people first meet. "A silly pun is my go-to way to break the ice." ⚠️ you break the ice WITH a joke, a question, or a game — and the thing that does it is an icebreaker.
- small talk (collocation) — light, polite conversation about unimportant everyday things. "Elevator small talk with your boss is an art form." ⚠️ uncountable — you MAKE small talk, never "do small talk" or "small talks".
- a conversation starter (expression) — something — an object, question, or remark — that easily begins a chat. "That vintage camera is a total conversation starter." ⚠️ the THING is the starter — a person who's great at chatting is "a good conversationalist".
- hit it off (idiom) — to quickly become friendly with someone. "We hit it off instantly and talked for three hours." ⚠️ HIT it off — never bare "hit off"; don't confuse with "hit someone up" (= contact them). Usually past tense: we HIT it off.
