๐Ÿ™… 5 Words That Make You Sound Native โ€” Saying No Politely | EnglishDrops

Most learners say no the same way: "No, sorry, I can't." Grammatically fine โ€” but natives have a whole toolbox for declining with warmth, humor, or quiet firmness. Episode 79 gives you five of them.

The 5 Words

1. turn down (phrasal verb)

  • Meaning: to politely refuse an offer, invitation, or request
  • Example: She turned down the invitation because she was exhausted.
  • โš ๏ธ Mistake: It's separable โ€” turn IT down, never turn down it. And turn down the music means lowering the volume โ€” context decides!
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Usage: Neutral and polite, works for jobs, invites, offers: I had to turn down the overtime.

2. I'm gonna pass (expression)

  • Meaning: a casual, friendly "no thanks" to an offer or activity
  • Example: I'm gonna pass on dessert tonight.
  • โš ๏ธ Mistake: In this meaning it's pass ON something โ€” while pass the salt means hand it over, not decline it!
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Usage: Very casual spoken English for food, plans, deals: Beer? Nah, I'm gonna pass.

3. take a rain check (idiom)

  • Meaning: to decline an invitation now but promise to do it later
  • Example: Can I take a rain check on brunch? Huge deadline this week.
  • โš ๏ธ Mistake: Fixed idiom: TAKE a rain check. It comes from rained-out baseball tickets you could exchange later โ€” and it keeps the door OPEN. It's not a hard no!
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Usage: The polite "not now, but soon": Rain check on the movie?

4. count me out (idiom)

  • Meaning: do not include me this time โ€” the opposite of count me in
  • Example: Karaoke till midnight? Count me out!
  • โš ๏ธ Mistake: Fixed pair: count me IN = include me, count me OUT = don't. Never don't count me.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Usage: Playful or firm depending on tone โ€” group plans, trips, bets: This month, count me out.

5. I'd rather not (expression)

  • Meaning: a polite but firm no โ€” you decline without inventing excuses
  • Example: Would you sing a solo? I'd rather not, thanks.
  • โš ๏ธ Mistake: No to, no -ing after: I'd rather not (say) โ€” never I would rather to not. The contraction I'd is what makes it sound natural.
  • ๐Ÿ’ก Usage: Declining without drama. Add "if that's okay" to soften โ€” it even works at work.

โœจ Magic Sentence

I turned down Jess's party โ€” I'd rather not sing, so count me out, I'm gonna pass on the duet, and I'll take a rain check on brunch.

All five chunks in one graceful exit. ๐ŸŽฏ

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Real-Life Dialogue
