๐ŸŒŸ 5 Words That Make You Sound Native โ€” Praising & Complimenting | EnglishDrops

๐ŸŒŸ Episode 89 โ€” Praising & Complimenting

Someone just nailed it โ€” the dinner, the portfolio, the presentation โ€” and "good job" feels way too small. Today's five chunks are exactly what native speakers say when they want their praise to land with real weight: the bow, the shoutout, the round of applause, the talent call, and the transformation.

The 5 Chunks

1. you've outdone yourself (idiom) โ€” you did even better than your usual best. "You've outdone yourself with this dinner!" โš ๏ธ It compares this effort to the SAME person's past best โ€” never to other people. ๐Ÿ’ก Great for meals, gifts, events, big wins; present perfect ("you've") is the natural compliment form.

2. props to (someone) (slang) โ€” public respect or credit for something. "Props to Leo for fixing this!" โš ๏ธ Always plural, with the verb GIVE โ€” "a prop" is a theater object, never "give a prop". ๐Ÿ’ก Casual workplaces, teams, social media; hip-hop roots, feels modern and generous.

3. kudos (expression) โ€” praise or credit for a job well done. "Kudos on the presentation!" โš ๏ธ Never "a kudo" or "kudoses" โ€” it stays singular. ๐Ÿ’ก The informal-professional sweet spot: safe in emails, Slack, and meetings.

4. a natural (expression) โ€” someone born with a talent; effortless at something. "She's a natural on camera." โš ๏ธ Keep the article โ€” "she is natural" (no "a") means she's not wearing makeup! ๐Ÿ’ก Casual praise for talent: sports, cameras, languages, teaching.

5. a glow-up (slang) โ€” a dramatic transformation in looks, style, confidence or skills. "Your English has had a glow-up!" โš ๏ธ It's a noun โ€” never "glow-upped" or "glow up someone"; people HAVE a glow-up. ๐Ÿ’ก Gen-Z casual; originally looks-focused, now common for skills and life chapters.

โœจ Magic Sentence

Kudos, Jenna โ€” you've outdone yourself; going from nervous beginner to a total natural in one year is a serious glow-up โ€” props to you!

๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ Real-Life Dialogue (fill in the blanks!)

A: Did you see Maya's new portfolio? It's incredible! B: Seriously โ€” you've _____ yourself this time, Maya! A: Right? She's a _____ on camera. B: Her editing has had such a _____ this year. A: _____ to her for all those late nights. B: _____ indeed โ€” she earned every bit of it.

Answers: outdone ยท a natural ยท glow-up ยท Props ยท Kudos
