The Hardware: Why Each Part Earned Its Slot

🧠 CPU: Ryzen 7 9800X3D — $415 USD / $570 CAD

There is simply no better gaming CPU on the market right now. Eight Zen 5 cores, sixteen threads, and 104MB of that sweet, sweet 3D V-Cache. It sips power at 120W TDP, runs cool, and absolutely demolishes frame-time consistency in CPU-heavy titles like Cyberpunk 2077, Baldur's Gate 3, and Microsoft Flight Simulator.

The 7800X3D at $334 is tempting for budget trimmers, but the 9800X3D brings better clocks and a newer memory controller. For $80 more, you get the current-gen king.

Why not Intel? Core Ultra 200-series chips are competitive in productivity but consistently trail X3D parts in gaming. On a gaming-first build, AMD owns this slot.

🎮 GPU: ZOTAC RTX 5070 Solid OC 12GB — $650 USD / $1,095 CAD

The RTX 5070 is the 1440p sweet spot. With DLSS 4 and frame generation, you'll push high-refresh-rate 1440p in essentially every title. The ZOTAC Solid OC variant runs cool and quiet with their IceStorm 2.0 cooler, and at $650, it undercuts the ASUS TUF ($750) by a clean $100.

12GB of GDDR7 on a 192-bit bus is plenty for 1440p. Yes, the 5070 Ti with 16GB exists, but at $1,088+ USD (and $1,690+ CAD), it adds 33% to your GPU budget for maybe 15-20% more frames. The value play here is the vanilla 5070.

AMD alternative: The RX 9070 GRE at $549 MSRP is theoretically appealing, but real-world pricing is all over the map. If you can find one near MSRP, it's a solid alternative. But NVIDIA's DLSS 4 ecosystem and better RT performance keep the 5070 as our pick.

📡 Motherboard: ASUS TUF Gaming B850-PLUS WiFi — $210 USD / $310 CAD

B850 is the sweet spot for AM5. You get PCIe 5.0 for the GPU, 3x M.2 slots, Wi-Fi 7, USB4 40Gbps, and a proper 14+2+1 VRM that'll handle even a future 9950X3D drop-in upgrade. At $210 (down from $240), this board is a steal. ASUS also includes BIOS Flashback — essential since your 9800X3D might need a BIOS update.

The Gigabyte B850 AORUS Elite WiFi7 at $194 is another great option if you prefer the Gigabyte ecosystem, but the ASUS TUF's VRM quality and USB4 port seal the deal for me.

💾 RAM: Patriot Viper Elite 5 RGB 32GB DDR5-6000 CL30 — $445 USD / $595 CAD

This line item hurts the most. This kit was $100 in September 2025. Today, $445.

But here's the thing — you cannot cheap out on RAM for an X3D chip. Infinity Fabric clock scaling means you want 6000MT/s at CL30 for the optimal 1:1 ratio. Going with a slower CL38 kit saves you maybe $40 but costs you measurable 1% lows in games. And dropping to 16GB in 2026? Don't. Hogwarts Legacy and Starfield already push past 16GB on high settings.

7,250 MB/s reads, 6,900 MB/s writes, and 2TB of space. The SN7100 uses next-gen TLC NAND and has an excellent endurance rating. At $302, it's cheaper than the Samsung 990 PRO ($390) while delivering effectively identical real-world gaming performance.

2TB hits the sweet spot: enough for Windows, a solid game library, and room to breathe. You've got two more M.2 slots on the B850 board for expansion later.

⚡ PSU: MSI MAG A750GL PCIE5 — $90 USD / $130 CAD

750W 80+ Gold, fully modular, ATX 3.1 with native 12V-2x6 connector. Ten-year warranty. 3,000+ units sold in the past month. At $90, this is an absolute no-brainer. The 9800X3D sips 120W and the RTX 5070 pulls ~250W — so 750W gives you plenty of headroom for transient spikes and future upgrades.

❄️ Cooler & 🏠 Case: The Value Heroes

The Thermalright Peerless Assassin 120 SE at $39 continues its reign as the undisputed king of air cooling. Dual tower, six heatpipes, handles 200W+ loads. For a 120W 9800X3D, it's overkill in the best way.

The Montech AIR 903 Base at $65 gives you three pre-installed 140mm fans, a mesh front panel for airflow, and surprisingly good build quality. No, it's not a Fractal North. But it's a third of the price and your GPU won't thermal throttle.


The DDR5 Crisis: What Should You Actually Do?

Look, if you're reading this and thinking "I'll just wait," I get it. But industry analysts don't expect relief until at least Q2 2027. The AI boom isn't slowing down, and DRAM fabs can't pivot overnight. Waiting could mean paying even more.

Here's my practical advice:

  1. Buy 32GB now, don't wait. 16GB is already borderline for AAA games. 64GB is overkill for gaming. 32GB is the sweet spot and you lock in today's price — which, yes, is terrible by 2025 standards, but might look reasonable by December.

  2. Go CL30, not CL36/CL38. The price difference is often only $30-50, and X3D chips are sensitive to latency. Don't kneecap your $415 CPU to save lunch money on RAM.

  3. Consider the used market. DDR5 doesn't degrade like SSDs. If you can find a trusted seller with a 6000 CL30 kit, it's worth a look. Just test it with MemTest86 before calling it yours.

  4. Don't buy 128GB for gaming. I shouldn't have to say this, but at $3,399, someone needs to hear it.

  • 🎨 The Montech case is functional but won't win any design awards

Who this build is for: Anyone who wants a no-compromises 1440p gaming experience, values upgradeability, and is willing to swallow the bitter DDR5 pill to build now rather than wait for an uncertain future.

Alternative path: Drop to a Ryzen 7 7800X3D ($334 USD) and a Crucial P310 2TB ($295), which saves ~$160. That gets you under the $2,000 USD psychological barrier while keeping 98% of the gaming performance.


The Bottom Line

In September 2025, this build would have cost you roughly $1,600. Today, it's $2,216. That $616 difference is almost entirely the DDR5 crisis — the RAM alone accounts for $345 of it. The rest is general component inflation and a slightly pricier B850 platform vs. last year's B650.

Is it fair? No. Is it the reality of PC building in August 2026? Unfortunately, yes.

But here's the thing: this machine will absolutely sing at 1440p. It'll game, stream, render, and compile for years. When (if?) DDR5 prices normalize, you can drop in a second kit. When next-gen GPUs arrive, the AM5 socket will welcome them. This isn't just a PC — it's a platform.
